One-Earth.com is a social enterprise that aims to "index the world's environmental solutions." Solutions are organized by city and further broken down into categories like "restaurants/cafes/bars" or "e-waste drop off centers". Anyone can view the solutions, but to edit or create a solution, one must register. Both options are free. By registering, a user has the ability to create and edit solutions using a wiki. The user is encouraged to describe in detail what makes a "solution" sustainable and to refrain from biased and slanderous remarks. [1]
The website publicly launched on May 16, 2009. Currently there are about 500 solutions mainly on the Brooklyn and Manhattan pages of the site. About 75% of the content on the site is user generated, while the other 25% is created by paid contributors. The articles are about local issues of sustainability and written by locals who are regarded as experts on the subject. A unique characteristic of the written articles is that they're each illustrated.
Development
[edit]One-Earth.com was created using Drupal, an open-source Content Management System (CMS). Marc Robinsone Nicholas Caballero has been the sole developer since June 2008.
Origin and History
[edit]One-Earth.com was founded in 2006 by Steven S. Matt in Brooklyn, NY. Mr. Matt is a graduate of Pratt Institute where he studied communications design. In a feature on sustainability in the Prattfolio, Mr. Matt says "[t]he internet has liberated us from the constraints of geography. However, one of the medium’s most underrated aspects is its ability to connect people locally and to allow for the communication of locally relevant information. Each community must call upon its “local experts”—average people who happen to know a lot about their community’s solutions for achieving sustainability. if we draw upon the world's vast source of collective knowledge, there is no need to reinvent the wheel along the way." <ref>Pratt Institute Editorial Staff (June 1, 2008).
