Hospital San Miguel is a Hospital located in the town Puerto el Carmen within the Canton Putumayo, Ecuador. The Hospital is part of the Dutch foundation Quina Care. By facilitating this hospital, Quina Care aims to improve medical health care in rural areas in the Amazon rainforest, as well as make it more accessible.

Foundation

The Quina Care foundation was founded in 2017. The first step to realize the goal of the foundation was identification of a suitable location for the hospital. The area of Putumayo, and especially the town of Puerto el Carmen was selected. In 2019, renovation of the former boarding school started. The building has two floors and measures a total usable area of 2700 m2. It is being transformed into a hospital in various phases.

The hospital first opened its door for patients in 2021. From that point on, it has been available for emergencies, poli clinics which are supported by a pharmacy and laboratorium. In August 2023, the ward departments were opened wich wards for men, woman and children. Moreover, the hospital provides the posibility for relatives that have accompanied the patient to stay over for the night.

Hospital San Miguel has oficially been accepted as a A2CARES-research location in Ecuador. A2CARES is one of ten research centers who jointly form the CREID-network (Centers for Research in Energing Infectious Disease) This network has a focus on research into emerging infectious diseases and development of regional science expertise and research capacity.

Research programs in the San Miguel Hospital are mainly focused on tropcial diseases such as dengue and malaria. [[Category:Society of Ecuador]] [[Category:Hospitals]]
