The Eastern Border is a podcast about the politics and history of Eastern Europe, especially about life and culture in the Soviet Union. It focuses on how the USSR influenced its former constituents and the legacy it left behind, as well as news and current affairs in the region.

It is hosted by Latvian historian, philosopher, journalist and podcaster Kristaps Andrejsons who grew up during, and immediately after the fall of, the Soviet Union and who can not only fall back on the sources, but on personal memory and interviews with those who lived under the regime.

While there have always been episodes devoted to news and current affairs mixed in with the history episodes, due to the Russian invasion of Ukraine on February 24, 2022 the podcast changed from history to being devoted exclusively to news and backgrounds of the war. He has also made several trips to Ukraine to report from there. Necessitated by these events, the frequency of episodes has increased.

Host[edit]

Kristaps Andrejsons (born August 8, 1989, in Riga, Latvia) was born in what was then the Latvian SSR. He holds a Master's degree in Western philosophy from the University of Latvia and is a journalist[1] as well as a podcaster.

He has contributed to Foreign Policy magazine in the run-up to the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine on the dangers faced by the Baltic countries[2] due to increased Russian agression, the cultural, historical, and religious underpinnings of the conflict between Moscow and Kyiv[3] And Russian president Putin's distorted views on Russian history[4].

During the 2022 Russo-Ukrainian war he has contributed to various other podcasts, such as The Telegraph's podcast 'Ukraine: The latest' [5][6], a collaboration with one of the hosts of Ukraine Without Hype[7] and The Political Orphanage [8].

News[edit]

Since February 2022 the podcast exclusively deals with updates from the Russian invasion of Ukraine. The length and frequency of these episodes are more varied than regular episodes, dictated by the events of the Russo-Ukrainian war, but on average they appear 3-4 times a week.

Andrejsons has made several trips to Ukraine to report on the conflict. In ... 2022 he traveled to the recently-liberated areas north of Kyiv. ...

In September he visited Mykolaiv, together with fellow podcaster Anthony Bartaway, where they conducted interviews with among others the governor Vitalii Kim and commander of the Belarusian Kastuś Kalinoŭski Regiment fighting in Ukraine, Denis "Kit" Prokhorov[9], as well as visiting Ukrainian villages close to the front line and speaking with the soldiers who were fighting there.

Episodes[edit]

Some subjects are standalone, others are too long for single episodes and are split into multiple episodes with varying numbers of episodes.

Most episodes have a duration of between thirty minutes and two hours and the publishing schedule is roughly every two weeks, however based on current events updates may happen more frequently.
