Ponoka is a Dutch indie band formed by singer/songwriter Rick de Gier. So far, they have released one record called Hindsight. Some references for their musical style are Lemonheads, Pavement, Sparklehorse and Eels.

History

[edit]

Ponoka was created in 2006 by Dutch singer/songwriter Rick de Gier. Its name is a reference to the birthplace of its founder, the Canadian town of Ponoka. For the past few years de Gier had been writing songs in his home studio in Zaandam. Now he started to record Hindsight in the studio of René de Vries (This Beautiful Mess), assisted by Minco Eggersman, René de Vries and singer Alice ten Brinke.[1]

Hindsight was received well in Dutch music press[2][3][4][5][6], and their single "Help is on the way" resided at the #1 spot in the Kink FM Top 40 for a week.[7] After that, de Gier started to look for people to complete the band and have a start with performing in public. Five people were found: Theo Nap on guitar, Lucas Nap on drums, Laurens Palsgraaf on keyboards, Jon van Til on bass and Alice ten Brinke as a singer. Since then, they have been touring the Netherlands to promote their album.[8]
