Introduction

'Dr Suresh Joshipura, is an internationally renowned Indian dermatologist. He owns the skin center, which is the state-of-art dermatology clinic in Rajkot, Gujarat. He is a veteran academician and has received many awards. Dr Joshipura is known for his volunteer dermatology services to the underserved. He has written many books chapters, given talks in many national and international conferences and has been in editorial board and reviewer of many dermatology journals.


Biography

Dr Suresh Joshipura, born on 19th January, 1953 in Porbandar, Gujarat, completed his schooling at Ramba primary school in Porbandar and his secondary education from Navyug vidhayalay. He earned his medical degree (MBBS) from M. P. Shah Medical College, Jamanagar and further completed his advanced training and residency in dermatology from V. S. hospital, Ahmedabad. He also owns a Ph.D. degree in HIV from Saurashtra University. Recently in 2014, the Royal college of Physicians at London honored him with MRCP degree.


Early career

Dr Suresh Joshipura started his career long back in 1983 with a sole aim of serving the society and creating awareness in skin diseases. He was the pioneer who introduced the importance of a dermatology specialist among people of underserved areas of Gujarat. He started his honorary services at H. J. Doshi medical research center, a trust hospital and subsequently went on to become its research director. He was also associated with a minority community hospital, Sifakhana, where he used to charge a negligible fee of Rs. 5 for consultation. Every Sunday, Dr Joshipura carried out diagnostic camps in nearby villages and towns with a hope of creating awareness about skin diseases and serving the people. He also provided free services to school children and hostel inmates.

He has done pioneer work for leprosy patients and their rehabilitation. He was instrumental to diagnose first HIV case in Rajkot on behalf of H.J. Doshi Medical Research Foundation along with Dr. M.L. Raval, Dr. Jayprakash Bhatt, Dr. Pradeep Karkare.

Dr Suresh Joshipura started his own skin hospital, ‘Skin Center’ with a clear focus of creating excellence in dermatology, since 30 years. After becoming, Medical research director at H. J. Doshi hospital, he headed and completed nearly 150 research projects in various specialists of medicine. One of his pioneer works is on Counseling in HIV/AIDS, which was his thesis topic of Ph.D. degree.


Awards and achievement

• American academy of dermatology has given awards for voluntary service in 2011.

• The Collector, Rajkot District presented Award for " Special Services" in AIDS
and LEPROSY for 1995.

• Instrumental in Eradication of LEPROSY by 2000 in Rajkot District.
Target given by W.H.O.

• Received the prestigious ‘Ratan Singh award by IADVL’ in DERMACON 2009 at Bangalore for meritorious services to the association.

• Appreciation certificate for excellent work during international conference of dermatology at New Delhi,2013.


Role in Indian Association of Dermatologists, Venereologists and Leprologists (IADVL).

Dr Suresh Joshipura is also greatly associated with Indian Association of Dermatologists, Venereologists and Leprologists (IADVL).

In 1996, he became secretary general of IADVL. From that point, he started his task to upgrade the association activities. In 2006, he was elected to the highest post of an 8000-dermatologist association, The President, with a thumping majority of votes. Under his guidance, many new projects of the association were started, like history book, ethical issue book, constitution and also interactive yahoo group. During his presidential tenure, he started an exchange program between British Association of Dermatologists (BAD) & IADVL, a World Congress of Dermatology fellowship program, Revamped IADVL website and revised the IADVL Constitution.

He played a key role in pushing the association’s image at a global level. He organized a mega event at Ahmedabad called DERMACON 2013, National conference of IADVL, in which more than 5000 dermatologists including national and international faculties took part.

In 2008, he became an international director of Asian Dermatology Association.

Personal life

He is married to Maya Joshipura, a statistical officer, with two children, Dr Deep Joshipura, Assistant Professor in Dermatology, and Jayati, a medical student.

These days, he is very active in social media for awareness of skin diseases.
