Topics

[edit]
  • Serial comma - The comma used immediately before a grammatical conjunction that precedes the last item in a list of three or more items (e.g. the phrase "Portugal, Spain, and France" is written with the serial comma, while "Portugal, Spain and France", identical in meaning, is written without it).
  • Bulls and Cows - An old code-breaking paper and pencil game for two players, similar to Mastermind.
  • Classical liberalism - A doctrine stressing individual freedom and limited government. This includes the importance of human rationality, individual property rights, natural rights, the protection of civil liberties, constitutional limitations of government, free markets, and individual freedom from restraint.
  • List of unusual topics - Just as it sounds.
  • African American Vernacular English - "AAVE is often perceived by members of mainstream American society as indicative of low intelligence or limited education. Furthermore, AAVE has sometimes been called "lazy" or "bad" English, although among linguists there is no such controversy, since AAVE, like all true dialects, shows consistent internal logic and structure."
  • PCB - A highly toxic organic compound, released into the environment by GE for over 30 years.
  • Sulfur hexafluoride - An incredibly dense, non-toxic gas, also referred to as "invisible water."
  • Wardenclyffe - Nikola Tesla's abandoned tower, intended to provide wireless communication services and electric power to the entire world, free of charge, in the early 1900's.

Books

[edit]
  • Anarchy, State, and Utopia - Robert Nozick argues in favor of a minimal state, "limited to the narrow functions of protection against force, theft, fraud, enforcement of contracts, and so on." When a state takes on more responsibilities than these, Nozick argues, rights will be violated. To support the idea of the minimal state, Nozick posits an ultraminimal state as a thought experiment and attempts to show how it will, by the workings of an "invisible hand", lead to a minimal state.

Movies

[edit]
  • On Deadly Ground - Steven Seagal stars as a mystical martial artist/environmental agent who takes on a ruthless oil corporation. Hilarity ensues.
