Suitor Armor is a fantasy webcomic hosted on WEBTOON. It is created by American artist Melanie Pulsipher, also known as purpah[1]. The comic follows Lucia, a lady-in-waiting, as she hides her true identity and falls for Modeus, an enchanted suit of armor[2].
Publishing
[edit]The idea for Suitor Armor came to purpah in a dream in 2018[3], and she began posting episodes on WEBTOON CANVAS, where it gained 40,000 subscribers across six chapters before being turned into an Original title[4]. Following this, the series was rebooted for WEBTOON and launched on September 17, 2020. The series is ongoing, and as of June 2021 has 1 million subscribers [5].
Plot
[edit]In a kingdom in constant war with faeries, Lucia Chauvet was orphaned and adopted by Kirsi Goldborne's father. She is a fairy, and to ensure her safety, she has hidden this fact from everyone except her adoptive father. Years later, Kirsi is set to marry King Reimund, and Lucia is her lady-in-waiting [6]. At a tournament hosted by Reimund, court mage Norrix reveals Modeus, an enchanted suit of armor that bests the king's champion[7].
Modeus is soon revealed to be developing real thoughts and feelings, going beyond what Norrix had created him for. With his new feelings, he is drawn to Lucia and becomes her protector after the castle (and Lucia) are attacked by a fairy named Quinn[8].
Themes in Suitor Armor include war, identity, romance, and acceptance.
Characters
[edit]- Lucia Chauvet is a fairy who has lived among humans for her entire life. She lady-in-waiting to Kirsi Goldborne, though the pair are closer to sisters than anything else. She binds her wings and covers her ears to hide her true identity. As a fairy, Lucia is also a talented magic-user, though untrained. She enjoys roses, outdoor activities, and magpies[9]
- Modeus is an enchanted suit or armor created by Norrix for the purpose of killing fairies. Following his win against Sir Baynard at the opening tournament, he gifts Lucia the champion's rose and forms a bond with her. He soon learns how to speak and develops feelings. However, most of the castle still sees him as an unfeeling piece of metal. He enjoys roses, his favorite animal is deer, and he stands at seven feet, five inches tall[10].
- Kirsi is Lucia's best friend and adoptive sister, though she is unaware of Lucia's true identity. She has been betrothed to Reimund since they were children.
- Norrix is Reimund's court mage and Modeus' creator. He is a skilled magic user who eventually educates Lucia.
- Sir Baynard is a knight and was Reimund's champion until Modeus defeated him a the tourney.
- Peres is Baynard's squire.
- Reimund is the king and Kirsi's fiancé.
- Quinn is a mysterious character who attacks Reimund's castle. Upon meeting Lucia, they immediately recognize her as a fairy and serve as her one connection to the fairy world[11].
