Dr. Hira Lal Sharma a man with charismatic charm is an icon of Academic Excellence in Himachal Pradesh Krishi Vishvavidyalaya, Palampur (H.P.),India.His revered mother Smt. Dev Dassi & father Late.Sh. Dharam Chand put him for schooling at the age of 6 in the village primary school and after wards from Govt. Co-Educational Higher Secondary School,Kullu, he passed 11th Standard in 1967. He joined B.Sc.(Agric) programme in College of Agriculture,Palampur, in 1968 and in continuity completed M.Sc. (Agric.) in 1975. Prof. H.L. Sharma completed Doctorate Degree in the discipline of Agronomy & Agro meteorology in the year 1983 as in-service candidate. In academics, he consistently improved his merit as he pursued his studies and ended with University Gold Medal in Ph. D programme. Although the village Gohorama is known for it's scholarly people yes Prof. H.L. Sharma has the distinction of being the highest qualified person in the village,till date..

Prof. H.L. Sharma started his career in November,1975 as Research Assistant(Agronomy) in College of Agriculture,Solan. After about nine months, he was transferred to COA,Palampur and was posted as Assistant Scientist(Agronomy) in AICRP on Potato Improvement. In the year 1985, he got selected as Associate Professor(Agronomy) and subsequently Professor (Agronomy) in 1993.During 2002-05, he served the University as Head of the Agronomy Department.On account of his remarkable acumen in academic matters, Dr. Sharma has been Chairman of the Academic Affairs Committee,research Advisory Committee,In-Charge Farms of the department for many years. At university level also, he has been Member Secretary of different committees like Research Evaluation Committee,Educational Technology Cell,Crop System research Teams etc. He has been convener of several committees constituted for refinement and updating of UG & PG course curricula, redrafting of Academic regulations from time to time,besides member of Board of Studies,Standing Academic Affairs Committee,Academic Council,University Admission Committe,Editorial Board of Himachal Journal of Agricultural Research for two terms.Legume Research-An International Journal,Governing body of ATMA and Consultant & Technical Advisor to Indo-German Changar Project.He has also acted as Technical Advisor to the Union Public Service Commission,Government of India, Himachal Pradesh Public Service Commission and many other selection committees for recruitment of various agricultural officers. In addition to his Teaching,Research & Extension assignments,Prof.Sharma was entrusted with an additional responsibility of establishing the first ever unit in the University, the Student's Counseling & placement Cell in June,2000.As its Coordinator, he provided guidance to students in job oriented courses and developed liaison with potential employers in the private & public sectors.Consequently, a good number of students got excellent placement through Campus interview during his tenure up to 2007.

In developing a Manual on Rural Agricultural Work Experience (RAWE) and in its implementation over a number of years in the undergraduate programme,role played by Prof. Sharma was very much appreciated by the Dean College of Agriculture as well as associated faculty.Till the formation of Technical Advisory Committee (TAC) of the University in MArch,2009, Prof. Sharma functioned as Chairperson of Planning ,Monitoring abd Evaluation(PME) Cell of university being established under the NAIP of ICAR and also obtaining ISO-9001:2000 Certifications.He has also assisted the Vice-Chancellor in handling the technical issues/matters as Officer on Special Duty to the Vice-Chancellor of CSKHPKV,Palampur. Towards the end of his career, to bridge a short gap between the retiring incumbent and appointment of the regular one, he held the charge of Dean,College of Agriculture.

He has guided 8 M.Sc. & 7 Ph. D students as Major Advisor and innumerable students as member od Advisory Committe. He has more than 60 research papers, 10 popular articles published in national & international Journals and attended about 20 conferences symposdia workshops. he is life member of many academic professional societies. In order to generate external funding Dr. Sharma has obtained and successfully many Ad-hocs and AICRP projects as Principal Investigator(PI) and CO-PI,being funded by DST,ICAR and PPIC, now International Institute of Plant Nutrition, etc. Prof. Sharma along with his students Dr. Janardhan Singh and Ph.D guide Dr. C.M. Singh collectively won the Best Paper Award of the Indian Society of Agronomy for the year 1994.He has evaluated several M.Sc. and Ph. D thesis of different Agricultural Universities. he has been regular reviewer of research papers submitted by scientists for publication in Indian Journal of Agriculture,Indian Journal of Agriculture Sciences,Indian Journal of Agricultural research,Legume research, Himachal Journal of Agriculture research etc. Prof H.L. Sharma has been a popular Teacher and Research Guide to the students and faculty of all the constituent colleges of the University on account of his excellent command & knowledge in experimental planning and statistical data processing.He rendered invaluable guidance to the students on this all pervading subject.

Prof. H.L.Sharma and his wife Mrs. Meera are blessed with two daughters,Anjana & Dr. Neetu and a son , Nitin, who have been married to Dr. Vivek, Sr. Pradeep and Mrs. Shivani. The couple is further blessed with grand children, Chinu,Pradu, Manu & Pravar.
