The current article is a stub and I would move the information of the festival separate from the basic information about the town. My additions will aid in creating a comprehensive article about the festival with background, history, events in the festival, cultural impact, and more

[edit]- Overview of festival events
Mythology
[edit]- Story of Aravan and Krishna
- Historically, the Koovagam festival has celebrated the myth of Aravan, son of Pandava prince Arjuna. The Mahabharata tells the story of how Aravan sacrificed his life in the 18-day Kurukshetra War. Some regions of South Asia hold the tradition of celebrating Aravan's self-sacrifice to the goddess Kali for the victory of the Pandavas in the war. The festival commemorates one of the favors granted to Aravan by Krishna in honor of his sacrifice. Aravan wanted to get married before he died, so Krishna took on the female form of Mohini. The next day, Aravan sacrificed himself and Mohini grieved him like a widow. (Still a rough draft).
