Protecting Women’s Sports: Former Redondo High Swim Coach Shines Light on Abuse[edit]

Masi in 2023

Masi's journey began in early May when he was alerted to instances of sexual abuse involving a peer coach, as reported by an athlete. This revelation propelled him into a morally complex battle, pitting his sense of duty against a callous culture of silence. Despite facing pressure from his Head Coach to remain silent, Masi made the courageous choice to report the allegations.

Astonishingly, he was met with resistance from the Redondo School District administration itself, which attempted to downplay and divert attention from the serious issue at hand. Masi's resilience ultimately led to his termination from his coaching position, underscoring the challenges faced by those who speak out against injustice.

It wasn't until July of 2023, when an article dropped exposing the Redondo Beach School District, [1] "Redondo High assistant swim coach fired after reporting alleged misconduct. Swimmers told they will be banned from sports if they protest.[1]"

As a former Swimming & Dive Coach at Redondo Union High School (RUHS), Sean emerged as a prominent figure in the realm of sports through his unwavering commitment to integrity and accountability, despite his coaching career being cut short at a young age. Masi's assumed the role of Assistant Swimming & Dive Coach at Redondo Union High School at the age of 20. Masi shed light on a deeply distressing case of sexual abuse within the domain of adolescent swimming women's sports.

Masi's actions triggered a Mandated reporter & U.S. Center for SafeSport statewide and nationwide investigation, uncovering a broader pattern of misconduct extending beyond the initial incident. Furthermore, the school found itself subject to investigations due to its failure to take appropriate action.

Masi's resolute determination also prompted soul-searching among other coaches in the South Bay, California area, leading to resignations due to the perceived ethical complexities of coaching. His actions served as a poignant reminder that safeguarding athletes, particularly young women, is a collective responsibility that must not be taken lightly. His reputation as a beacon of safety and accountability was established at a remarkably young age.

Although Sean Masi's coaching journey at Redondo Union High School was curtailed, his influence and impact endure as he embarks on a new chapter as a college swim coach at Boise State University. His legacy as a trailblazer for accountability and the protection of women's sports remains firmly etched in the annals of sports history.

[2] “If I don’t prioritize the interests and safety of our athletes above my own, then I am unworthy of bearing the title of coach,” Masi said. “Safeguarding the well-being of these remarkable individuals remains paramount above all. I have dedicated myself to uphold these values throughout the entirety of my career, in and out of the pool, without yielding to any external influence or compromise.[2]” - Sean Masi
