Samuel A. Culbert is a professor at UCLA Anderson School of Management, in the fields of organizational theory and applied behavioral science.[1] He is known for his "trans-organizational" research methodology commentaries on workplace dynamics, identification of mismanagement practices, and theories on the sources of workplace-induced alienation.[2]
Early life and education
[edit]Culbert was born in Chicago in 1938 and completed a B.S. in Industrial Engineering at Northwestern University in 1961. He then pursued a doctoral degree in social psychology at the University of Wisconsin, where he met Robert (Bob) Tannenbaum, a guest lecturer from UCLA. Culbert developed an interest in Tannenbaum's work on sensitivity training for leaders and joinedTannenbaum at the UCLA Anderson School of Management. He worked as a research assistant under Tannenbaum and James V. Clark where he studied the use of T-groups. His doctoral research involved small group dynamic principles to conduct sensitivity training courses and workshops aimed at enhancing self- and interpersonal awareness. He received a Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from UCLA in 1966 and a board license as a clinical psychologist in 1967. He then completed an eight-week postdoctoral internship with the National Training Laboratories (NTL) for Applied Behavioral Science. He was subsequently offered a 2-year contract to work for the NTL where he served as the program director of the Center for Organization Studies and director of Intern studies between 1967-1969.[3]
Academic career
[edit]Culbert worked as an associate professorial lecturer at George Washington University from 1968-1969. He then returned to UCLA's Anderson School of Management as a professor in 1969.[3]
His research interests involves the use of human-systems approaches associated with the Quality of working life (QWL) movement to improve corporate management.
