Introduction[edit]

As my username clearly doesn't indicate, my name is John and I'm an English Major/History Minor. The dream is to be able to earn a good living off my writing (fiction and non-fiction), but anything in the publishing industry, such as editing, would be fantastic as well.

Personal Life[edit]

I was born and raised in Toronto, but moved to Guelph September 2009 when I started at U of G. I miss Toronto terribly, but having all DE courses this semester has allowed me to spend significantly more time there than I had been (1.5 visits a month on average was not enough!). My girlfriend is finishing her Masters from Western and I have a dog vicariously through her (an English short-haired pointer).

Education and Academic Career[edit]

I am working to complete my four-year Honours degree in three years (so by the end of April 2012).

I am currently taking these six courses:[edit]

  1. CIS*2050 Computers and Society
  2. HIST*3140 Witch-hunts and Popular Culture
  3. HIST*3530 Celtic Britain & Ireland Since 1603
  4. MUSC*1130 Introduction to Musicianship
  5. MUSC*2150 Music and Popular Culture
  6. THST*2500 Contemporary Cinema

and will be taking 3.0 credits in each of the next two semesters as well. This fast-tracking has been due to the fact that I took six years off after finishing high school in 2004, which ended up being a good thing because I was originally going to enroll at York for computer programming (not that I wouldn't have enjoyed it, but English seems to be a better fit).

Hobbies[edit]

As mentioned above, writing is the dream, and as such I read a lot and often about the writing experience (not the how-tos so much as the whys). I have been a peer-reviewer at Critters [1] (one of the internet's oldest and most successful peer review sites; a couple members just won Nebula Awards!) for the past six years or so. This will carry over to the fall and winter semesters when I will be the executive instructor of the restructured creative writing group (please feel free to ask me about it).

I am also a huge hockey fan (Go 'Nucks!) and avid gamer.
