The Thai Wikipedia (วิกิพีเดียภาษาไทย, Wikipedia Pasa-Thai, literally "Wikipedia: Thai-language version") is the Thai-language edition of Wikipedia, a free, open-source online encyclopedia. Started by the Wikimedia Foundation and was launched on December 25, 2003. As of September 2021, It has over 140,600 articles with 1,057 active contributors. It is the 56th largest Wikipedia as measured by the number of articles. It also ranks 4th in terms of depth among Wikipedias. Wikipedia is available in languages other than Thai. Wikipedia has more than 280 languages, and related projects include a dictionary, quotations, books, manuals, scientific reference sources, a travel guide, a data repository, and a news service. All these are maintained, updated, and managed by separate communities and often include information and articles that can be hard to find through other common sources. Many visitors come to Wikipedia to acquire knowledge, while others come to share knowledge. At this very instant, dozens of articles are being improved, and new articles are also being created. Changes can be viewed at the Recent changes page and a random page at random articles. 181 articles have been designated by the Wikipedia community as featured articles and another 158 articles are designated as good articles.
History
[edit]- The Thai Wikipedia is the second online encyclopedia in the Thai language after the Thai Junior Encyclopedia Project, which was developed under the patronage of King Bhumibol Adulyadej.
- During the 2005-2006 Thai political crisis, a speaker advised that Thai people read Wikipedia's entry on Thaksin Shinawatra, the former prime minister, during a public forum. Thaksin Shinawatra is a successful businessman and politician in Thailand. Thaksin was a prime minister who championed projects like poverty relief and infrastructure development, as well as declaring a war on narcotics, which was especially popular in rural regions. Thaksin has been Prime Minister three times before the September 19, 2006 coup d'etat.
- On 31 January 2006, Thai Wikipedia was first recognized along with English Wikipedia in the Thai press. In 2007, a thesis, Thai Wikipedia and Communicating Knowledge to the Public, was published by a graduate student from the Faculty of Fine and Applied Arts, Chulalongkorn University.
- As of January 2021, the Thai Wikipedia is the most visited Wikipedia in both Thailand and Laos. Wikipedia is distinct from the classic encyclopedia format, which was established by professionals and gathered a vast amount of non-academic information. Therefore it receives the greatest traffic. - Wikipedia promotes a positive online community in which people are encouraged to learn from their mistakes and refrain from making personal attacks and harassment of other Wikipedians. Editors should always be considerate and respectful of one another. They should focus on improving the encyclopedia while maintaining a pleasant editing environment by behaving politely, calmly, and reasonably, even during heated debates.
- Editing policy
- You can update or edit pages as needed without worrying about leaving them imperfect. However, important modifications should be explained on the discussion page.
- Editing warring
- If someone objects to your adjustments, talk to them about it and seek a compromise, or seek dispute resolution. Do not start an argument over competing opinions and versions. Reverting any part of any single page more than three times in twenty-four hours, or even once if long-term edit-warring is apparent, can result in a block on your account.
- Ownership of content
- The pages that you create and edit belong to the community, even though you retain some rights under Wikipedia's copyright provisions. Others have the ability to mercilessly edit "your" material.
- Harassment
- Threats, nitpicking good-faith edits to different articles, repeated irritating and unwanted contacts, repetitive personal attacks, or publicizing personal information must not be used to prevent other editors from enjoying Wikipedia.

- The ideal title for a Wikipedia article is recognizable to Thai speakers, easy to find, precise, concise, and consistent with other titles. A good Wikipedia article title has the five following characteristics: Recognizability, Naturalness, Precision, Concision, and Consistency
- Biographies of living person
- Articles about living persons, which require a degree of sensitivity, must adhere strictly to Wikipedia's content policies. Be very firm about high-quality references, particularly about details of personal lives. Contentious material that is unsourced or poorly sourced should be removed immediately.
- Neutral point of view
- Everything that our readers can see, including articles, templates, categories, and portals, must be written neutrally and without bias.
- No original research
- Articles may not contain any unpublished theories, data, statements, concepts, arguments, or ideas; or any new interpretation, analysis, or synthesis of published data, statements, concepts, arguments, or ideas.
- Wikipedia does not publish original thoughts. All material in Wikipedia must be attributable to a reliable, published source.
- Verifiability
- Articles should cite sources whenever possible. While we cannot check the accuracy of cited sources, we can check whether they have been published by a reputable publication and whether independent sources have supported them on review. Any unsourced material may be challenged and removed.
- What is not Wikipedia
- Wikipedia is an online encyclopedia. Please avoid the temptation to use Wikipedia for other purposes
Deletion
[edit]- Deletion policy
- Deleting articles requires an administrator and generally follows a consensus-forming process. Most potentially controversial deletions require a three-step process and a waiting period of a week.
- Criteria for immediate deletion
- Articles, images, categories will be "immediately deleted" if they fall within certain categories, which generally boil down to pages lacking content, or disruptive pages. Anything potentially controversial should go through the deletion process instead.

- Administrators, like all editors, are not perfect beings. However, in general, they are expected to act as role models within the community, and a good general standard of civility, fairness, and general conduct both to editors and in content matters, is expected. When acting as administrators, they are also expected to be fair, exercise good judgment, and give explanations and be communicative as necessary.
- Banning policy
- Extremely disruptive editors may be banned from Wikipedia. Please respect these bans, do not bait banned users, and do not help them out.
- Bot policy
- Programs that update pages automatically in a useful and harmless way may be welcome, as long as their owners seek approval first and are careful to keep them from running amok or being a drain on resources.
- Blocking policy
- Blocks may be applied to user accounts, to IP addresses, and ranges of IP addresses, for either a definite or an indefinite time, from editing to protect Wikipedia from disruption.
- Sock puppetry
- Do not use multiple accounts to create the illusion of greater support for an issue, to mislead others, or to circumvent a block. Do not ask your friends to create accounts to support you or anyone.
- Username policy
- When choosing an account name, do not choose names that may be offensive, misleading, disruptive, or promotional. The username should represent one person; do not use your organization's name.

- Vandalism

- 1.To approve and remove access to CheckUser and Oversight tools.
- 2.To serve as a final, binding decision-maker in cases where the community has been unable to resolve significant conduct problems.
- CheckUser
- CheckUser is a tool allowed to be used by a small number of editors who are permitted to examine user IP information and other server log data under certain circumstances, to protect Wikipedia against actual and potential disruption and abuse.
- IP block exemption
- Editors in good standing whose editing is disrupted by unrelated blocks or firewalls may request IP block exemption, which allows editing on an otherwise-blocked IP address.
Article assessment
[edit]- Many articles in Wikipedia are being assessed and graded. There exists its own project within Wikipedia that does nothing else than reviewing articles to grade them, upgrade them or downgrade them. There are 6 grade levels an article can have after an official assessment.
- Most relevant (highest quality) are articles in status “featured article” and “good article”. Those articles were scrutinized and verified the most and are also frequently reviewed to make sure that the article still meets the quality criteria and can keep its high grade.

- Featured articles are considered to be some of the best articles Wikipedia has to offer, as determined by Wikipedian's selection. Before being listed here, articles are reviewed as featured article candidates for accuracy, neutrality, completeness, and style according to our featured article criteria.
- There are 181 featured articles out of 142,5095 articles on Thai Wikipedia (about 0.127%). Articles that no longer meet the criteria can be proposed for improvement or removal at featured article review.

- A good article (GA) is an article that meets a core set of editorial standards, the good article criteria, and passes through the good article nomination process successfully. They are well written, contain factually accurate and verifiable information, are broad in coverage, neutral in point of view, stable, and illustrated, where possible, by relevant images with suitable copyright licenses. A good article that has been promoted to featured status is removed from the good articles list.
- Currently, out of the 142,509 articles on Wikipedia, 158 are categorized as good articles (0.111%).
