Usage

[edit]

{{supra}} and {{short form}}, and their wrappers {{supra footnote}}[1] and {{short form footnote}}[2] are meant to be used in concert with {{bluebook journal}} and {{bluebook website}}, although they may work with reference styles as well.

  • {{supra}} and {{supra footnote}} are used for content other than case citations.
    • The first parameter (unnamed or |1=) should contain the name of an existing citation on the page.
    • If the citation in question does not have any "hereinafter..." listed, simply copy the exact string of authors given, e.g. Dewey or Cheatham & Howe.
    • If there is a "hereinafter...", copy that. Italicize if applicable.
  • {{short form}} and {{ShortFormFn}} are used for case citatons.
    • The first parameter (unnamed or |1=) should contain the short form of a case name (usually the surname, or entity name minus "Inc." etc., of the first party before the "v.")
    • The second parameter (unnamed or |2=) should contain the volume and reporter, but usually not the page number, of the opinion in question.

All four templates will ignore any discrepancies as to spacing, commas, or ampersands, although not a spelled-out "and". An |at= parameter allows specifying a pinpoint.

A custom |ref= parameter allows overriding the above logic, creating a link to any ID on the page. Its value should usually use {{BluebookRef}} or {{SfnRef}}

Like their analogous template {{harvnb}}, {{supra}} does not include terminal punctuation. As a shorthand for the markup <ref>{{supra|...}}.</ref>, one can use {{Supra footnote|...}};[1] likewise {{Short form footnote}}[2] to wrap {{short form}} in the same way. These are analogous to {{sfn}}.

Examples

[edit]
  • {{supra|Dewey & Cheatham}} → Dewey & Cheatham, supra
  • {{supra|Howe|at=22}} → Howe, supra, at 22
  • {{supra|Dewey et al.|at=[https://example.com/thing.pdf#page=9 ¶ 9]}} → Dewey et al., supra, at ¶ 9
  • {{supra|Car Talk ep. 1|at=59:00}}Car Talk ep. 1, supra, at 59:00
  • {{supra|The Three Stooges|ref={{SfnRef|Farrelly|Farrelly|2012}}}}The Three Stooges, supra
  • To use this template with {{cite court}}, set |ref= parameters for both. It is recommended to wrap the ID name in {{SfnRef}}:
    • {{cite court|litigants=Lozman v. City of Riviera Beach|reporter=S.Ct.|vol=138|opinion=1945|date=2018|url=https://www.oyez.org/cases/2017/17-21|ref={{SfnRef|lozman-138}}}}Lozman v. City of Riviera Beach, 138 S.Ct. 1945 (2018).
    • {{supra|Lozman, S.Ct. 138|at=1955|ref={{SfnRef|lozman-138}}}}Lozman, S.Ct. 138, supra, at 1955
