General
[edit]HALT (Help Abolish Legal Tyranny) Inc. was founded in 1978, by four pioneering legal reformers - Paul Hasse, Matt Valencic, Bob Tigner and Kathy Ekedahl. HALT is now the nation's largest legal reform organization, a nonprofit, nonpartisan public interest group of more than 50,000 members.
HALT Advocacy Projects
[edit]• The Freedom of Legal Information Project aims to widen access to the legal system by both educating legal consumers about and protecting their rights to a variety of legal services provided by lawyers and nonlawyers.
• The twin goals of the Lawyer Accountability Project are to make lawyers more responsive to the needs of legal consumers and to empower legal consumers.
• The Judicial Integrity Project works to strengthen protections against conflicts of interest by judges and to increase public accountability in the judicial branch of government.
• HALT’s Small Claims Reform Project publicizes the advantages of small claims courts and educates consumers about how to take advantage of these courts. The project also advocates for systemic reforms that increase access to these courts.
HALT publishes national report cards, white papers, legislative work, appellate litigation, best practices surveys, and media campaigns in an effort to inform and protect the legal consumer.
