The Story of Ferdinand[edit]

The book tells a story of a free-spirited bull who did not possess the more violent tendencies that bulls normally would have. The Story of Ferdinand was published in 1936 by Viking Hardcover. After this book was published, soon it was labeled as having an alternate political agenda.

Plot[edit]

Ferdinand grew to be the biggest bull in the herd. He often spent time alone, which allowed him to become a much easier catch for the five men coming to choose a bull to take to Madrid for the bullfight. When Ferdinand enters the bull ring, he is faced with a man holding a red flag. He does not understand what is happening, and is approached by a man riding a horse who stabs him in the shoulder.

Background[edit]

Months after Ferdinand was published, the civil war in Spain broke out. Those who came into power at this time banned the book, calling it “degenerate democratic propaganda.”

In 1938, the book became a bestseller and an animated short was created. Which then went on to win the Academy Award for Best Short Subject. Then 80 years later, a full length movie was released by 20th Century Fox.

Film Adaptions[edit]

In 2017, the movie Ferdinand the Bull was released. It was produced by Blue Sky Studios and then issued out by 20th Century Fox.
