[edit]IP VPN-Lite provides the ability to run IP VPN Virtual Private Networks using MP-BGP extensions (based on RFC 4364) across a normal IP backbone infrastructure instead of MPLS. Unlike MPLS-based IP VPNs, IP VPN Lite is purely based on an end-to-end IP transport, thus simplifying OA&M and eliminating the need to upgrade the existing backbone infrastructure to support MPLS and avoiding complexities involved with running and maintaining an MPLS backbone.
While still leveraging the RFC 4364 framework at the control plane level, Nortel IP VPN-Lite delivers the same IP VPN capabilities over a IP routed backbone using simple IP in IP encapsulation. IP VPN-Lite differs from RFC 4364 MP-iBGP control plane by using a service IP address instead of a MPLS service label. The service IP address identifies a VRF on a per node basis and is used to carry the VPN traffic across the backbone as part of the outer IP header of the IP in IP encapsulation.
For end-to-end transport, the service IP addresses are used to identify the source and destination VRFs which form the VPN.
