How It Works is one of the latest additions to the portfolio of magazines belonging to Imagine Publishing, which also includes popular publications such as Gamestm, Sci Fi Now and Smartphone Essentials. It launched in October 2009, aiming to provide a science and technology magazine with a wide-appeal to the general public, with dozens of articles describing how both complex and basic things work in every issue. Based in Bournemouth, UK, the magazine was originally sold only in the UK and USA but its rise in popularity has seen syndication magazines published in countries throughout the world including France and Germany.

Regular content[edit]

In addition to original and topical content every month, How It Works runs a variety of regular features within the magazine

  • Global Eye News - Includes "This day in history" and "Month in facts", as well as new additions such as “Inside Out” and “What on Earth is it?”
  • Global Eye Column - From October 2010 to March 2011, Adam Hart Davis provided a regular column
  • Global Eye Interview - Previous interviewees include Professor Brian Cox and Adam Hart Davis
  • Home Experiment - Prove and disprove scientific theories in your own home

In late 2010 the first How It Works Annual was launched, which included content taken from issues 1-12 of the magazine. After selling out in a week, the compendium is back in stock as of 05-13-2011.

The How It Works Book of Space, a collection of space articles from back issues of How It Works, went on sale in late 2010.

The How It Works Book of Amazing Answers to Curious Questions, an eBook for Amazon’s Kindle, launched on May 2011.
