Biography:

Theo De Gelaen is born in Halle (Belgium) the 4h of September 1956. His father mother both where officials.

Theo studied marketing, applied psychology, neuro-psychology, neurology and quantum physics.

When he was 15 years old he came across martial arts for the first time with judo. That wasn't a difficult choice because at that time there was nothing else in the neighborhood.

When he got married at the age of 20 he moved to Brussels and there was a karate school. He signed in immediately and became a passionate practitioner. Karate became a passion that he would never abandon.

Again because there was no other choice he practiced Shotokan karate in the first place. A style he didn’t like that much because of all the restrictions there where in at that time like for example the fact that one was not allowed to grab the opponent etc.

That’s why, besides karate, he started to practice ju jitsu as well.

After he obtained his first Dan degree in Shotokan karate, he changed from still and started practicing Shitoryu karate because this style integrates a lot of ju jitsu techniques. Until today, he is practicing that style.

Besides karate he kept on practicing ju jitsu as well as Aikido and Shintaido.

In the mean time Theo De Gelaen worked professionally as a teacher in Social, Human and management skills for different education institutes.

His specialty in the beginning where assertiveness and defensibility training.

But Theo is in the first place a scientist always looking for answer to questions from himself as well as from his students. By the question “why is it that people are not assertive in some situations?”, he did some research on emotions and because at that time there wasn’t that much useful in psychology, he explored neurology. And so, the research and study of the brain functioning became his new passion.

Thanks to this study he was able to develop the special course BRAINMAPPING who teaches people to make a better use of their brain by learning how it woks and how to use this knowledge for better study and information management.

For years it was his most successful course together with his assertiveness training.

One of Theo’s dreams was to write a book one day. For 7 years he worked on the research and preparation of a book about assertiveness. In the summer of 1996 he retired himself for a whole month in a remote farm in the Camargue, South France. Theo always was a passionate horseman. So the Camargue with his wild horses became his second home.

By the time Theo came back, his book was finished but he still did not have a publisher.

But, has he came back from the Camargue, the Dutroux affair exploded in his fullness. It was a pedophile affair in which several children where kidnapped, abused and murdered by a man named Dutroux. For weeks and months this affair was on the news all over the world.

The question that engaged everyone was: “how can we prevent this from happening again and how can we protect our children?”

Making them more assertive and defensible would be a step in the right direction. Theo realized himself that he was in the position to make a contribution and he wrote a letter to some publishers with the proposition that he was ready to rework his book so that it would help parents to make their children more defensible.

Within two days he had a positive answer from the publisher Globe (Roularta) who liked the idea and was prepared to publish the book. His first book was born and a dream came true.

His first book came out in January 1997 and the title was “Defensible parents, defensible children”. It became a bestseller and got a lot of media attention. In total there where 3 prints of the book.

The book was such a success that the publisher asked Theo to write a new one but this time aimed on the adolescents and to make them more defensible as well. In 2000 this book was published under the tittle “Skill-full in the Social traffic”. As well as all 6 books, this one was published by Globe.

All the time Theo remained with his other passion: practicing martial arts! But little by little the accent had changed.

Ever since the beginning Theo was fascinated by the concept of Ki which is present in all martial arts but nearly nobody seemed to know exactly what it was.

About 1990 he started studying Qi Gong with the late Renate Hütten. In the beginning only for the healthy aspects of Qi Gong, but soon he made the link to Ki and the martial applications of Qi Gong.

In the mean time he was pretty advanced in his study of zen.

Thanks to his Western study of applied psychology and neurology he was familiar with working with the subconsciousness and began to see more and more obvious the link between East and West in so far that he had no problems to integrate Eastern elements in his Western courses as well as using Western neurological principles in his martial art.

The result was his new book project. In October 2002 his book “The true power of zen” (ISBN 90 5466 719 2) was published. In this book he translated the zen principles in such a way that they become useful for Western people to integrate in their daily live. Like his other books this one is a successful too. By now there are all ready 3 prints.

About 1993 Theo De Gelaen came in contact for the first time with pressure points. It is also called kyusho jitsu or Dim Mak and it is about the use of the acupuncture theory in martial arts.

This will change his perception and experience off martial arts dramatically. Suddenly everything became more obvious and clear. Techniques and applications became more logic and significant.

This became even stronger once he was able to make the link between the acupuncture theory and the neurology and discovered that both had the same impact and result but with a different approach. From now on all his attention went that way and he visited seminars of nearly everyone with some name in that world in order to develop his knowledge and skills.

Unfortunately he had to discover that the main purpose of these persons was gaining has much money has possible and that their knowledge was either limited or either they where not willing to share.

So he had no other choice than to do his own research.

Which in the beginning wasn’t that easy at all, until he discovered the link with Qi Gong or his martial equivalent Fa Jin or the use of kinetic energy. Suddenly everything became very clear and he was able to reconstruct a lot of ancient knowledge that had been lost in history and to make it available again for the contemporary martial artist.

In those 20 years Theo De Gelaen became a world authority in this domain and has made a lot of courses and DVD’s.

In 2004, together with his wife Philomène and his best friend Sam vander Mey, he founded the international martial art federation Daochi Dim Mak EWS which purpose it is to develop and spread the knowledge about inner martial arts such as pressure point fighting, Qi Gong and Fa Jing. Today, this organization has more than 300 members.

On his professional domain, Theo isn’t resting too.

In the mean time he developed several new courses like "How to lead and motivate collaborators". This was also the item of his new book that was published in 2004 ( ISBN 90 5466 865 2) “The art of motivating and the art of leading”.

There was still demand for his first books, but for some unexplainable reason both manuscripts had disappeared. So his publisher asked him to rework the books. This book was titled: “Enhancing your defensibility and assertiveness” and was published in October 2005 (ISBN90 5466 990 X)

Another new course was: “Dealing with aggression”. Theo was not blind for the increasing aggression in the society and decided to engage his expertise on the domain of emotions, assertiveness but also Qi Gong and quantum physics to develop a revolutionary answer.

Therefore his 6th book is about dealing with aggression and has the title “Dealing with aggression and violence: a non violent response to verbal and physical aggression. It was published in 2006. (ISBN 90 5466 865 2)

Inside the organization Daochi he is also working around aggression with his long-term course Non Violent Aggression Respons (NVAR) and this in order to form instructors. This resulted in the AgEnCo project (Aggression Energy Control) which purpose it is to organize locally courses and speeches about aggression. Theo has always been dedicated to combine the Eastern approach with the Western science because the both are valuable and additional one to another. He tries to integrate as much as possible knowledge and science in the martial arts.
