IPS deliveryman Doug is king of his domain with a converted basement paradise that houses his brand new prized possession, a 70-inch television, given to him by his loving wife Carrie. Life has suddenly become very, very good for Doug, who becomes the envy of his sports-watching buddies. But bliss is brief when Carrie persuades him to let her recently widowed father, Arthur, move into Doug’s "cave" rather than go to a retirement home. To add insult to injury, Sara, Carrie’s ne’er-do-well sister, sets up camp in Doug’s bathroom. Plus, the big screen TV is half blocked by the bed after its moved to the couple’s tiny bedroom. | |||

After getting a photo album out, Arthur shows Doug a picture of Carrie's mother. Doug sees that her mother was overweight and Arthur tells him that everyone in that family got fat when they got older. He then tricks Carrie into going on a diet by saying that he would like to go on one. | |||

Doug can't figure out why Carrie refuses to go on a double date with Richie and his wife, Marie. Then he finds out that his wife is cheating on him and can't figure out a way to tell him. So when Richie decides that the four of them should go to Atlantic City, which makes matters worse. So Doug goes with Richie to Atlantic City and Doug tells him just before Richie wins a large bet. Meanwhile, Arthur tries to get Doug to return his lousy antiperspirant back to the company that made it to get a refund. | |||

Doug and Carrie throw a wedding anniversary party for themselves. Doug invites his aunt (Brenda Vaccaro), and finds out that his aunt and uncle are having problems. When Arthur meets Doug's aunt, he falls for her. Doug then tries desperately to break the couple up in hopes of getting his aunt and uncle back together. | |||

Carrie decides that she and Doug are getting dumber everyday, so she signs them up for a classic literature class. Doug is not very happy about the decision, and tends to goof off in the class. They are given an assignment to read the novel Jane Eyre, and then answer questions on what they read. Doug never reads it, and is desperate for the answers. | |||

While Doug is taking a driving test, he runs into Ray Barone (Ray Romano). Ray seems to have trouble with a few of the questions, and asks Doug for the answers. Doug is caught by the instructor, and loses his license. Ray makes it up to Doug by taking him to a New York Jets football game. Ray's brother Robert (Brad Garrett) goes with them. After the game, Ray lets Doug drive, and Robert finds out that Doug does not have a license. Robert, being a cop, tells Doug to pull over. With no license and suspended from his delivery job, Doug tries to help Carrie study by playing with Arthur. Finally, Doug passes his drivers test only to have met Ray's father (Frank) who happens to crash into Doug's car outside the DMV. | |||

Doug, Carrie, and Arthur head to the supermarket on the day before Thanksgiving. Carrie is challenged by making a whole Thanksgiving dinner from scratch by Arthur's demands. Doug has met a guy that he does not know, but the guy knows everything about him. Soon, all of them find the true meaning of Thanksgiving. | |||

Doug and Carrie's new freshly-starched neighbors appear to have only one flaw – a noisy nocturnal dog named Stanley. Closer inspection reveals deeper wrinkles as the Heffernans learn keeping the hound quiet is only one of their neighbor's many personal problems. Doug, who understands the dog just needs a little attention, secretly begins walking the dog. Carrie is angry with Doug for not being tougher with the neighbors, but after a final dysfunctional confrontation about the barking, the Heffernans conclude Stanley is better off with them. Meanwhile, Arthur is certain Charles M. Schulz is using his likeness as inspiration for Charlie Brown and the rest of the Peanuts gang. | |||

Carrie is annoyed at the idea of turning 30 and is considering forgoing her birthday altogether. Doug has plans to watch the Ultimate Fighting Championship on the same day as Carrie's birthday. Doug is happy to learn about Carrie's decision to skip her birthday, in order to hide his happiness he cooks up a quick birthday agenda including a limo, Deacon and Kelly and a restaurant Carrie has wanted to try. Seeing how much thought Doug has put into her birthday Carrie decides to go ahead and go ahead with his plans. Doug races to make her birthday happen which leaves him sitting outdoors in freezing temperatures with Carrie, Deacon, Kelly and Deacon's Mother, who was brought along on a promise for the UFC pay-per-view taping. | |||
