The Faculty of Law of the Rio de Janeiro State University (Portuguese: Faculdade de Direito da Universidade do Estado do Rio de Janeiro – UERJ) is a law school located in the city of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. It was founded in 1935, when 20 judges who were unhappy with law schools from that period of time decided to begin a more democratic and diverse course that would not be aligned with any political affiliations[1].

Throughout more than 80 years of history, the Faculty of Law of UERJ is regarded for its scholars. In 2013, when Luís Roberto Barroso was appointed by President Dilma Rousseff to the Brazilian Supreme Court, he was the third member of the Court who was also a professor at the school, alongside now retired Joaquim Barbosa and Luiz Fux[2].
