History
[edit]The history of the organization goes back to 1986, the year in which the originally Dutch company was founded by Dries Veen and Dick Hakkenbroek. From 1999 to 2005 Thomas Cook Netherlands had an 80% interest in the organization; the remaining 20% was held by Europeesche Verzekeringen. Thomas Cook divested Belvilla because Belvilla 's activities did not fit within its strategic focus as an all - round tour operator. Belvilla then became its own company under the name Leisure Invest Belvilla.[2]
In 2007, the company Belvilla-Euro Relais was created from a merger between Belvilla and EuroRelais. Belvilla was part of the @Leisure Group from 2007 to 2019, the majority of which belonged to the German publishing house Axel Springer SE.[3]
Since 2019, Belvilla has been a part of OYO Vacation Homes (OVH) which acquired the Leisure group for a price of €369.5 million. OYO Vacation Homes is a brand under OYO Rooms, a global hospitality group based in India that manages 43000+ hotels and 150,000 homes across 80 countries. Mandar Vaidya was appointed as the CEO of OVH in April 2021.
Criticism
[edit]In 2017, the Netherlands Authority for Consumers and Markets (ACM)[1] imposed a fine of 325,000 euros on Belvilla for violation of the Unfair Commercial Practices Act in the period from 4 May 2017 to 1 June 2017. According to the decision, it was not possible to book a holiday home for the starting price stated on www.belvilla.nl, and the company misled its customers by not correctly stating unavoidable variable costs in the price.[4]
