Introduction

[edit]

CIAN's main operations are located at The University of Arizona's College of Optical Sciences, which provides resources for both theoretical and applied research programs in all areas related to optics and the optical sciences. The center headquarters is on the 5th floor of a new 47,000 square-foot West Wing addition, completed in 2006.

The CIAN Grand Challenge Testbed, located on the campus of UCSD,(CNS) is a shared research facility where CIAN's research from the various Thrusts is integrated, enabling collaborative research among CIAN participants and with the wider research and industrial community.

The Testbed for Optical Aggregation Networking (TOAN) at the University of Arizona includes traffic generators (including NetFPGA blade servers and IXIA traffic generator), 0.5Tbit/s switching nodes (including two Fujitsu Flashwave 9500's), a WDM-PON system (from FNE), optical analysis equipments, CDC ROADM networks, 100G coherent setup and a unified SDN control plane.

Lab Resources

[edit]

F-1. Alnair Automatic Bandwidth-Variable Tunable Filter (CVF-220C)

The CVF-220 programmable filter has both bandwidth and wavelength tunability, with a wide bandwidth tunability of 0.1 - 15nm (at -3dB). The typical insertion loss at the narrowest bandwidth is only 5.0dB, even with the built-in power meter and peak-search functionality. Furthermore, the CVF-220 has a wavelength accuracy of <0.05nm which cover the entire C-band.The CVF-220 is unique in that it possess all of the above features in the one, standard configuration.

Key Specs:

Maximum Input Power: 1W

Connector: FC/APC

Bandwidth tunability: 0.1-15nm

Wavelength accuracy: ~0.01nm

W-1. Oclaro 1x20 Wavelength Selective Switch (WSS)

The Oclaro 1x20 WSS provides the specifications: (1) Lower insertion loss (3.5dB); (2) The hitless switching time is less than 300ms; (3) Excellent blocking and superior port isolation for the back-to-back architecture (>24dB); (4) Negligible PDL and Ripple. (5) 96 Channels 50GHz spacing.

W-2. Nistica 1xN Wavelength Selective Switch (WSS) Nistica 1xN WSS supports the following features: (1) One or two optional integrated optical monitors (2) support mixtures of channel spacing with 3 GHz resolution (3) any bit rate transmission

Key specs:

Channel spacing: 50GHz-100GHz tunable, resolution:12.5GHz

Total power limit: 27dBm

Maximum power per channel:15dBm

Switching time: 5ms-30ms
