Lednice-Valtice Music Festival (Lednicko-valtický hudební festival, abb. LVHF, English abb. LVMF) is an international festival held annually since 2016 at the Lednice-Valtice area at the turn of September and October. Traditionally, eight concerts are held during two weeks in various buildings built by the Liechtenstein family. Many of the concerts are also closely connected and contextualized to this family. By October 2022 the festival is a member of The Czech Association of Festivals.

History

Until 2022, 7 editions of the festival took place.

1st year (2016)

The first year of the festival was held in chamber manner. There were two concerts, one in the riding hall in Lednice and the other in the riding hall in Valtice. The main star was Václav Hudeček, who has been regularly returning to the festival ever since.

2nd year (2017)

The second year focused on the works of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Franz Schubert who were greatly admired by the architect of the Liechtenstein family, Joseph Hardtmuth. Performances included those of Pavel Haas Quartet, PhilHarmonia Octet Prague, Janáček Chamber Choir and Barocco sempre giovane, as well as soloists Kateřina Javůrková, Jan Mráček and Patricie Janečková.

3rd year (2018)

The third year was motivated by the personality of Josef Triebensee, last kapellmeister of the Liechtenstein family. Together with Czech Philharmonic Choir, St. Gelért Academy Orchestra, Belfiato Quintet and Musica Florea, Svatopluk Sem, Doubravka Součková, Aleksander Rewinski, Petr Nekoranec and Simona Šaturová were amongst the soloists.

4th year (2019)

The fourth year celebrated 300 years since the establishment of the Principality of Liechtenstein and 770 years since the Liechtensteiners settled in Czech lands. Therefore, several composers who were in their service (Johann Georg Orschler, Johann Melchior Pichler and Nicolaus Zangius) were performed in their honour. Performing artists included Adam Plachetka, Collegium Marianum, PKF – Prague Philharmonia, Lukáš Vondráček or Cosima Soulez Lariviére.

5th year (2020)

The fifth year focused on folk-inspired music in the broadest sense of the word. There was klezmer performed by Ostrava Klezmer Band, folk inspirations by Janoska Ensemble, music by Folkloreclassic with the accompaniment of Janáček Chamber Orchestra or String Quartet No. 1 in e minor “From My Life” performed by Pavel Haas Quartet.

6th year (2021)

The sixth year was a tribute to Antonio Vivaldi in reminiscence of 280 years from his death. World-renowned performers such as Jakub Józef Orliński, Fabio Biondi, Amandine Beyer and Delphine Galou were featured, along with Ensemble Matheus, Ensemble Scaramucchia, Accademia Bizantina, Europa Galante and others.

7th year (2022)

The seventh year focused on the music of former Yugoslavia with composer Dora Pejačević as a red thread weaved through the festival programme. Her compositions were performed artists including Ensemble Illyrica with Josipa Bainac, Daniel Karvay, Vid Veljak, Aljoša Jurinič, Latica Anić and Boris Prýgl with Nika Gorič together with Janáček Philharmonic Ostrava.

8th year (2023)

The 2023 edition is scheduled for 23 September – 7 October with rising classical music stars from around the world as a main festival theme.

Location and venues

LVMF chooses not-so-ordinary venues and tries to bring the audience to objects not usually associated with music. Apart from large orchestral concerts taking place in the riding halls of Lednice and Valtice castles, these are usually sallets in the Lednice-Valtice area (LVA). Thus, the audience could already visit Pond Chateau Lednice, Chateau de Frontiere, Belveder Pleasure-House Valtice, Mansion Pohansko, Temple of Diana – Rendez-vous or Lednice Minaret. However, the festival extends to other surrounding towns’ venues (Břeclav Synagogue, Mikulov Castle or Havlíček Villa in Břeclav-Poštorná). And the audience from nearby Austria was not deprived either, where concerts took place in both City and Garden Palais Liechtenstein in Vienna, ale rovněž na Wilfersdorf Castle or St. Bartholomew’s Church Katzelsdorf-Bernhardsthall.

Off programme

Additionally, many accompanying events are held every year. Sunday afternoons are devoted to lectures, which are given by experts with connection to the concert programme. Thus, the Jewish community of Břeclav has already been presented (Alena Káňová), oriental motifs in Lednice Area (Přemysl Krejčiřík), the arrival of the Croats in Moravia (Miroslav Geršic) or the composers Nicolaus Zangius (Vladimír Maňas) and Antonio Vivaldi (Václav Kapsa, Francesco Fanna).

Furthermore, educational concerts are held in the morning on weekdays, where pupils of local primary schools can get acquainted not only with various instruments, but also with different musical styles, genres and composers.

For those who are not satisfied with the number of eight concerts, there is also a regular festival prologue, which took place twice in Vienna and once in LVA nearby villages Hlohovec and Charvátská Nová Ves.
