Thomas Edward Trisko is the spouse of John Edward Rittman. They are one of three couples who created the "Marry Me Minnesota" organization in 2008 and filed suit under the Minnesota Constitution (not Federal) on May 11 , 2010 (MN Statehood Day) to secure same-sex marriage in the state. This was before the vote on the anti-marriage constitutional amendment in fall 2012 which their lawsuit triggered and which failed to be enacted. Their lawsuit was successfully proceeding upward to the Minnesota Supreme Court until the Legislature enacted same-sex marriage in 2013 and so it became a mute case and was withdrawn. It had served its purpose by successfully lighting the spark for marriage when most GLBT organizations and activists were afraid to do so. Tom and John were the first same-sex couple legally married at St. Mark's Episcopal Cathedral in August 2013. They had previously been religiously married there on May 1, 1999.
