William Mintram (March 1841 – April 15, 1912) was a fireman on the RMS Titanic after it struck an iceberg on 14 April 1912. William worked for White Star Line after his release from prison for the murder of his wife.

Married Life

[edit]

William married Eliza Eliza Mary Rose Veal on 16th August 1886[1] and went on to have five children with her, William Jnr, Charles, George, May & Rosina.[2] Rosina was married to Walter Hurst who was also a fireman on the Titanic.

Murder

[edit]

On October 18th 1902 William is reported to have killed his wife over a disagreement about her pawning the children's shoes to buy alcohol for her personal consumption.[3] Upon standing trial the jury settled on a verdict of manslaughter and the judge ruled that he should serve 12years of penal servitude.

Death

[edit]

William died on the Titanic as one of its many victims. On the night of the sinking William had managed to find a lifejacket but his son-in-law Walter had not, so William gave him his. His actions are attributed to Walter's survival.[4]
