This page tests the Coptic block (U+2C80 - U+2CFF) and parts of the Greek and Coptic block (U+03E2 - U+03EF) and is laid out in a grid format for easy comparison against the online Unicode charts.

It is based on and requires the following sources:

If you have correctly installed the latest version of the above fonts, then all of the characters below will appear, unless otherwise specified. The installation instructions are available here.

This page might not display properly with older versions of Internet Explorer or Netscape. Netscape & Firefox may show an unsupported character using a different font than the one selected. Internet Explorer seems to do this too, but to a much lesser extent. It is recommended that you use IE 7 on a 16:9 widescreen moniter to view this page.

Coptic Unicode Block:Installation Instructions[edit]

The following is a guide on how to correctly install the latest version of New Athena Unicode and to type in Coptic unicode characters:

  1. Click on this link and a screen should open asking you if you want to save the file or open it.
  2. Just save the file anywhere you like.
  3. Go to the Zip file and extract it to a place where you remember it.
  4. Navigate to the Fonts folder in by going to your system's Control Panel
    1. Windows 2000/ME/98/XP/Vista - Start -> Settings -> Control Panel ->
  5. Type in the address "C:\WINDOWS\Fonts"
  6. Once in the Fonts folder, go File -> Install New Font...
  7. An "Add Fonts" window will open.
  8. Navigate to the location of where you saved the font and it should appear in the "List of fonts" field.
    1. NOTE: It will appear as "New Athena Unicode (TrueType)"
  • Click the OK button.
  • Click your browser's Refresh or Reload button.

If the code was correctly installed on your computer, you should be able to see all, if not most, of the Coptic text in the above sections:

Typing & Viewing Coptic Unicode Characters[edit]

Once the code is correctly installed, you need to know how to type in Coptic letters.

  • Option one: the following is one of many online tools that simplifies the process of editing Coptic Unicode characters:
  1. Add this website to your favourites.
  2. For the letters borrowed from Greek in the Coptic-style, go to the "2CFF" subrange.
  3. Open a new window and repeat step 1.
  4. Go to the "03FF" subrange for the Demotic Coptic letters.
  5. Type the necessary characters on both. Click copy and click "allow" acess.
  6. Don't assume that it's copied if it asks you for access—it will only copy if you click copy more than once per session.
  • Option two: consider installing a Character Map program that is compatible with unicode characters. Eg, the BabelMap utility.

Setting Coptic as the Automatic Browser Font[edit]

At this point, your browser should be fully functional for the above purposes.

Should there still be any viewing problems, take the following steps (for IE 5, 6, & 7; Mozilla Firefox; etc):

  1. Click Tools --> Internet Options --> Fonts
  2. Select "New Athena Unicode" for automatically viewing Latin script. This allows for languages written in Latin script (ie: English) to be viewed simultaneously with Coptic.
  3. Click OK and OK again.

...If problems persist, contact your system administrator or retry the above steps.

In any case otherwise, your browser is now fully compliant with Coptic unicode texts.

The link you supply above (very.co.il...) requires a username and password. (Taivo (talk) 23:03, 21 February 2009 (UTC))
corrected (the link worked in the past...). Actually, this page is sort of defunct; normally, I just make changes to incubator:Ws/cop/Comprehensive Coptic Unicode 5.1 test page, but I fixed it here anyway ...I really need to use my namespace pages more effiecently. ~ Troy (talk) 16:57, 22 February 2009 (UTC)
