Johna Leddy is an American electrochemist, who currently works at the University of Iowa, where she holds the position of Associate Professor of Chemistry.[1] She is a renowned electrochemist who develops rigorous mathematical proof for electron and substrate transport. She described her research as a Venn Diagram with Electrocatalysis and Energy at the center, and Electrochemistry and Magnetic Materials on the outside.[2]

Education

[edit]

She attended Rice University, earning her B.A. in Chemistry, studying under Professor Lon Wilson working in fullerene chemistry. She has mentioned that her brother attended Rice at the same time that she did.[3]

She performed her graduate work at the University of Texas under renowned Professor Allen J. Bard. She has spoken openly about being one of the only females in the Bard group, and that people didn't quite understand how to bridge the gap to help females along into the scientific enterprise. She credits Larry Faulkner and Joe Malloy with helping her along the way, as her "older brothers" in the academic sense, meaning that they graduated from the Bard group prior to her graduation. Her postdoctoral tenure at Los Alamos National Laboratory was characterized by the development of proton exchange membranes at the beginning of the launch of fuel cells.

Career

[edit]

After receiving her Ph.D. from the University of Texas, Dr. Leddy was a Postdoctoral Fellow in the Fuel Cell Program at Los Alamos National Laboratory. Prior to her hiring at the University of Iowa, Dr. Leddy was an Assistant Professor of Chemistry at the City University of New York and Queens College from 1986-1991. During her career as a professor of chemistry, she has had dozens of high impact publications with 25 total US Patents. Additionally, she has supervised the research of more than 30 graduate students, 60 undergraduate students, and 4 postdocs.

Her work on Proton Exchange Membranes and her contribution to electrochemistry have been highly read and cited.[4] Her large contributions to this field will be necessary for fuel cell research.

Notable Publications

[edit]
  • Coauthored the Solution Manual for the graduate level electrochemistry text, Electrochemical Methods by Allen J. Bard and Larry R. Faulkner, her Ph.D. advisor and graduate school labmate, respectively.
  • L. Zook and J. Leddy, "Density and Solubility of Nafion: Recast, Annealed, and Commercial Films," Anal. Chem. 68 (1996) 3793-3796
  • K. J. Oberbroeckling, D.C. Dunwoody, S.D. Minteer, and J. Leddy, “Density of Nafion Exchanged with Transition Metal Complexes and Tetramethyl Ammonium, Ferrous, and Hydrogen Ions: Commercial and Recast Films,” Anal. Chem., 74(18) (2002) 4794-4799.

Electrochemical Societies

[edit]

Dr. Leddy is very involved in service to The Electrochemical Society (ECS). She has been a member of the ECS for decades.[5] Her appointments and service on committees for the ECS include:

  • New Technology Subcommittee (1997-2006)
  • Education Committee (1993-2000), (2006-2012) (including 2 terms as Chair)
  • Member-at-Large, Secretary-Treasurer, Vice-Chair, and Chair of the Physical and Analytical Electrochemistry Division (1993-2003)
  • President

According to the ECS, she has been a significant figure in shaping the organization. She has connected with scientists around the world and has mentored many young researchers.[6]

She is also a member of the International Society of Electrochemistry and the Society for Electroanalytical Chemistry, where she served as a member of the Board of Directors and as Treasurer.

Life

[edit]

In 1998, Johna Leddy and Malcolm Yeh (a neurologist running a sleep clinic) married in the company of many electrochemists and neuroscientists.[7] The two met through a mutual friend who was Leddy's neighbor and Yeh's colleague.
