[edit]Champa means “Chafa” flower. These flowers were extremely dear to this devi hence she was known as Champavati Devi. The history of this mandir dates around 700 years back.
The story goes…Once a Koli (Fisher man) was stuck in storm. He prayed to goddess Shree Champavati Devi if I am able to returns to shore safely. I will come to your mandir and offer you 1000 Champa (Chafa) flowers. On his return he did not find 1000 Chafa flowers he then purchased 1 flower for 1000 rupees and offered to the goddess and prayed to her to accept the offering. Surprisingly Champavati devi accepted the offering made by tilting her head to the right. Since then her neck is tilted to the right.
About the Temple
[edit]Shree Champavati Devi is the family goddess (Kulswamini)of the Mumbai based Sahani/Sane families she is the first to be worshipped before beginning any new project or venture she is the destroyer of obstacles. This is Shree Chamapavti Devi Temple at Chaul, Raigad district in Maharashtra a two-century-old Temple that fulfills the desires of the worshipers.
The Chaul village is a mute witness to places of worship & historical interest, which are not only popular but also of archaeological importance.
Arguably the most popular & significant places of worship are the Shree Champavati Devi Mandir situated close to Rameshwar mandir in Chaul. This temple was first consecrated on Sunday 4th May 2003, a fact that is noted in government records. The temple then was a small house like structure housing the black stone idol of Shree Champavti Devi, which was two and half feet wide. The outstanding feature of this deity is the tilt of the neck to the right side. The idol has four hands, which contains a Trishul and Damru in upper right hand, a small parshu in upper left hand, Flanking the deity on both sides are Idols of Shri. Ganpati and Hanuman to the right & Guru Datta to the left, along with shri garud bhagwan. Signifying sanctity, fulfillment, prosperity and riches.
