Actress Urmila Sharma is proud of her accolades which she get for her roles, but admits that she had a hard time in industry when she first moved to Mumbai from Tollygunj, Kolkata. Urmila says that she was a typical housewife with a happy family with two kids and a lovable husband. The acting bug bit her when she made her portfolio "just like that." Later the same month, she joined Usha Ganguly's theater group called "Rang Karmi." She got her 1st break in an album "Aye Babuwa" by MK Singh released by T-series and later she was casted in a telefilm Lekhak.'
Based on very little support and very high confidence, she came to Mumbai. However, the initial stage of struggle in Mumbai is not simple for anyone. For her, it was no different. "When I came to Mumbai" she said, "I got miniscule roles of 2 days which neither fetched respect nor recognition. These shoots didn't even give me a chance to built my identity in the Indian television"
In the midst of the most disappointing phase of her career, she got a noticeable role in Sai Baba. That is when she decided that she won't be taking up any character role hereafter. With her hard and good work in Sai Baba, she started getting roles and few of her following projects were Kalpana(DD1), Prithviraj Chauhan(Star Plus), Paap Punya ka Lekha Jokha(DD1), Uttran(Colors), Main Aisi Kyun Hoon(SaharaOne), Jeevan Saathi(Colors), Behanein(Star Plus), Ma Marathicha(Me Marathi),Hindi film Billu with Shah Rukh Khan and Played mother of Dhanush in Raanjhanaa.
These roles gave her a chance to show her acting ability, but she was still waiting for a break that would help her to build her identity in the television. Her dream was fulfilled when she finally got a break in Yeh Rishta Kya Kehlata Hai(Star Plus), where her role of Rukmani got amazing response from the audience and TV fraternity and now Urmila was a known face at all households.
