Ankiti Bose (born 1991) is an Indian entrepreneur and businesswoman who co-founded the beauty and lifestyle marketplace, Zilingo Pte Ltd. in 2015. She is currently serving as the Chief Executive Officer of Zilingo.[1]

In 2018, Bose appeared in the Forbes 30 under 30 list in Asia, alongside the co-founder of Zilingo, Dhruv Kapoor.[2]

Early Life and Education[edit]

Ankiti Bose, was born in Dehradun, India.[3] Her father worked as an engineer at a state-owned oil company in India. Her mother, a university lecturer by profession, quit her career to supplement Bose's education at home. Her father's profession resulted in the family moving across country several times during the course of Bose's childhood, exposing her to the various languages and cultures within the country. At the age of 10, her family moved from Dehradun to Mumbai, where she enrolled in the R. N. Podar School.[4]

She was awarded a B.A. from St. Xavier's College, Mumbai in 2012 where she studied Mathematics and Economics. She studied International Business at the NYU Stern School of Business as a summer scholar in 2010.[5]

Career[edit]

Professional Background[edit]

Bose began her career as a management consultant for McKinsey and Company, India, working in the technology, media and telecom sector. She worked at Mckinsey from 2012 to 2014. Subsequently, she spent a year as an investment analyst for Sequoia Capital, a venture capital firm before deciding to quit and develop Zilingo along with the co-founder, Dhruv Kapoor. She developed business acumen, and knowledge of consumer internet and startups while working at Sequoia.[6]

Zilingo[edit]

Bose developed the idea for Zilingo in 2014 while visiting the Chatuchak Market in Bangkok and observing that many people flew in from nearby regions to purchase fashion and lifestyle products from local vendors. Bose noted that putting small vendors online could be the solution to the demand and supply issue.[7] She identified common issues faced when bringing small vendors online, such as language barriers, long payment duration, inconsistent sizing, and currency conversion.[3]

Bose met Dhruv Kapoor in December 2014, then a software engineer at Kiwi Inc., at a house party hosted by a mutual friend. At the time, Bose was working as an analyst at Sequoia. Upon recognizing that they shared similar aspirations, both quit their jobs within the next four months to found Zilingo with their savings of $30,000 each.[4] Bose designed the core team which designed and launched the business, and placed emphasis on integrating into the culture of every new market Zilingo enter. She also focused on developing a revenue-maximizing business strategy which would get value for the users.[8] In February 2019, Zilingo said it raised $226 million from investors like Temasek Holdings Pte. and Sequoia Capital.[4] It posted revenues worth $1.3 million in March 2017, up from $320,000 posted in March 2016.[7] As a consequence, Bose earned a spot in the Forbes 30 under 30 Asia under the category "Big Money" alongside Kapoor.[2] In it's fourth year, Zilingo was valued at $970 million, resulting in Bose becoming one of 23 female founders in a total of 239 venture capital-backed startups valued at $1 billion.[6]
