Ustad Ghulam Abbas Khan - Indian Classical and Ghazal Vocalist
[edit]Indian classical and ghazal vocalist goes by the name Ustad Ghulam Abbas Khan who heads from a very small village which many of us might not know called as Rampur Sahaswan Gharana. He is the son of Padmashri Late Ustad Ghulam Sadiq Khan & grandson of Padmabhushan Ustad Mushtaq Husain Khan.
He received his training for classical music from his late grandfather who was an eminent Sarangi player of India & then after from his late father Padmashri Ustad Ghulam Sadiq Khan, who was a great Classical Vocalist of India.
Ustad Ghulam Abbas Khan has performed in more than 25 countries including U.S.A, U.K, Australia, Japan, Netherlands, France, Germany, Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, China, New Zealand, Bhutan, Mauritius, Saudi Arabia, Oman, U.A.E, Turkey, Thailand, Afghanistan etc. He has given more than 400 concerts globally. Ustad Ghulam Abbas Khan specializes in Hindustani Classical Vocal (Khayal & Tarana) but he sings Thumri, Dadra, Ghazal, Bhajan & Sufi with equal ease.
Times Music, Nupur Audio, Sagarika, Mystica Music are few reputed record labels of India who have released albums of Ustad Ghulam Abbas Khan in different genres of Music like Hindustani Classical Vocal (Khayal), Thumri, Dadra, Ghazal and Bhajans to name a few.
Career -
[edit]Ustad Ghulam Abbas Khan started his career at the age of 17 when he started singing classical vocal with his father late Ustad Gulam Sadiq Khan. Apart from classical he also started singing Ghazal in different youth festival in Delhi University & got over 100 prizes in Inter college & Inter-University Music Competition. In 1985 he started performing professionally both in India & abroad. He has performed in very prestigious Hindustani Classical Festivals like ‘Ustad Bade Ghulam Ali Yadgar Sabha’, ‘Rag Rang Festival’, ‘Silsila Festival’, ‘Sangeet Natak Academy Concerts’ etc.
In 2007 he performed at Rashtrapati Bhawan (Presiden House of India) in front of Honorable President of India Late Shri A.P.J. Abdul Kalam. In Ghazal singing, he performed in many prestigious concerts globally like ‘Ghalib Rang’ based on the poetic work of Mirza Ghalib, ‘Sheeshon ka Maseeha’ based on poetic work of Faiz Ahmed Faiz ‘Naya Shiwala’ based on the poetic work of Allama Iqbal ‘Khazana Ghazal Festival’ etc.
He has numerous recordings on Doordarshan, Zee-TV & Insync Television Networks. He has released more than 15 albums of Hindustani Classical Vocal, Ghazal, Dadra, Sufi & Bhajans with prestigious record labels of India like Times Music, Nupur Audio, Sagarika Music & Mystica Music. He has also composed music for Bollywood films titled ‘Ek tha dil ek thi dhadkan & Jana let’s fall in love.’ He also composed Ghazal albums for Pankaj Udhas, Hariharan, Jaspinder Narula & Suresh Wadekar. He has created many compositions in Hindustani Classical Vocal, Ghazal. Recently he has created a new Raga in Hindustani Classical Music named Mohini Bhairav and his work is commendable.
Awards & Recognition -
[edit]- In 2009 Ustad Ghulam Abbas Khan received Senior Fellowship Award from Ministry of Culture of India for his research on Hindustani Classical Music.
- In 2017 he received Global Achievement Award for his contribution in Hindustani Classical Music.
- In 2018 he received Dr Radhakrishnan Award for his contribution in Hindustani Classical Music as a Guru.
- In 2018 he received prestigious Mahatma Gandhi Legacy International Award.
