Uwe P. Gielen[edit]

Biography[edit]

Uwe P. Gielen was born in 1940 in Berlin, Germany and subsequently grew up as an internal refugee in Lindau, Bavaria. After studying sociology at the Freie Universitaet Berlin, Germany from 1963-1965, he migrated to the USA where he received his M.A. in psychology from Wake Forest University in 1968 and his Ph.D. in social psychology from Harvard University in 1976. After teaching at the City University of New York from 1973-1980, he joined the faculty of St. Francis College as Chairman of the Psychology Department (1980-1990). Currently he is Professor-Emeritus of Psychology and Executive Director of the Institute for International and Cross-Cultural Psychology, which he founded in 1998 as a unique research and teaching center dedicated to the internationalization of psychology. He has also taught at Shanghai Normal University, China, Padua University, Italy, and Montfort College, India.

International Psychology Organizations[edit]

Gielen has been involved in many internationally oriented psychology organizations and frequently been elected to leadership positions. He has served as president of the Society for Cross-Cultural Research, the International Council of Psychologists, and the International Psychology Division (52) of the American Psychological Association. Besides organizing and co-organizing a number of international psychology conferences in the USA, Italy, Portugal, Russia, Taiwan, and Indonesia, he has given presentations and offered workshops in 33 countries on more than 300 occasions.

Institute for International and Cross-Cultural Psychology (IICCP), St. Francis College[edit]

Founded by Gielen in 1998, the IICCP’s (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Institute_for_International_and_Cross-Cultural_Psychology) core mission is to foster the internationalization of the science of psychology. The institute sponsors research and publications in international and cross-cultural psychology, forms part of a network of ties with other interested psychological institutions around the world, and promotes cross-cultural awareness at St. Francis College. Members of the institute are active locally, nationally, and internationally.

Research interests and publications[edit]

Gielen’s main research interests include the following:

His numerous publications include 20 edited/co-edited/co-authored books and nine edited/co-edited special journal issues that have appeared in five languages. They cover areas such as the moral psychology of Lawrence Kohlberg, international psychology, human development across cultures, death and bereavement, cross-cultural counseling, family therapy and family studies, psychology in the Arab countries, and international migration. In addition, he has served as chief editor of World Psychology and the International Journal of Group Tensions. A major current research project focuses on the psychosocial adjustment and acculturation of Chinese-American immigrant adolescents and emerging adults in New York City.

Awards[edit]

He is the recipient of the 2005 Distinguished International Psychologist Award, APA Division 52 (International Psychology), the Helmut E. Adler Distinguished Address Award from the New York Academy of Sciences, as well as the Kurt Lewin Award and the Wilhelm Wundt Award, both from the New York State Psychological Association.
