Biography
[edit]Jessie Kesson, a novelist and playwright, was born Jessie Grant Macdonald in an Inverness workhouse in 1916. . At the age of 10, she was separated from her mother and placed in an orphanage for the next six years. She had a nervous breakdown, so she was transported to a hospital near Loch Ness to recover. It was there that she met Johnnie Kesson, the man who would become her husband.[1]
Achievement
[edit]Kesson worked a wide range of professions, including night shifts in a children's care facility and working as a live model for Woolworth's. She was also a drama teacher and a producer for BBC Radio.
Throughout her life, Kesson made a number of famous friends, including publishers, agents, and fellow writers. Nan Shepherd, Flora Garry, Lisa St Aubin de Terán, Cecil Day Lewis, and Neil Gunn were among her pals. She also kept many longtime acquaintances from her childhood in north-east Scotland.
She continued to work full time and pursue her literary profession until she was 60 years old. By the 1950s, Kesson had produced several radio dramas and was frequently featured in Scottish journals.[2]
She died in 1994.
