Irving Nachamkin was editor-in-chief of Clinical Microbiology Reviews from 2002 to 2012, published by the American Society for Microbiology. During his tenure, he initiated a formal editorial review board for the journal and also oversaw a number of innovations to the journal including author biographies at the end of each article and using a professional graphic designer for all artwork in the journal. During that time, the journal continued to rank highly among microbiology journals (top 5) in Impact Factor.

Currently, he is Director of the William Pepper Laboratory of Clinical Medicine (est 1895) and Professor of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at the Perelman School of Medicine, University of Pennsylvania, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He initially started in the Department in 1982 as Assistant Professor and Associate Director of the Clinical Microbiology Laboratory, where he is a senior attending on that service. Clinical Microbiology has a rich history at the University of Pennsylvania dating back to 1895 where Samuel Stryker Kneass, MD was its first associate. He is the author of 145 peer-reviewed manuscripts plus numerous book chapters and reviews. He has had a long standing research interest in Campylobacter infections and has edited three books on the subject, all published by ASM Press. In addition to his interest in gastrointestinal infections, he is actively involved in numerous studies as a Co-Investigator of federally funded studies on the epidemiology of antimicrobial resistant infections including risk factors, interventions and diagnostics.

He received his B.Sc. in Medical Laboratory Science from the University of Bridgeport, Bridgeport, CT in 1975 and graduate degrees in public health (MPH, DrPH) from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, NC. He completed a CPEP accredited fellowship in Medical and Public Health Microbiology in the Department of Pathology at the Medical College of Virginia, Virginia Commonwealth University, Richmond, VA in 1982 under the direction of Harry P. Dalton, PhD (died 11-1-2015).

He was elected to fellowship by the American Academy of Microbiology (2000), Infectious Diseases Society of America (2000) and the College of Physicians of Philadelphia (2003). He has been an active member of the Eastern Pennsylvania Branch of ASM and has served National ASM in several roles over the years including as member of the Publications Board, ASM Books Committee, and voting member of CPC (2005-8).
