Evaluate an article[edit]

This is where you will complete your article evaluation. Please use the template below to evaluate your selected article.

  • Name of article: (Alvin Ailey)
  • I’ve chosen to evaluate this article because it is about a black artist. I happen to connect with people who identify with black artists. Also this article is about a significant model in the LGBTQ+ community who i also feel are neglected out of history. So I’m choosing to evaluate it to improve the circulation of information.

Lead[edit]

Guiding questions
  • The lead does include a satisfactory introduction that hints towards the main topics in the article. Dance, school and personal information are present in the lead which are the main topics in the article.
  • The lead includes a description of most of the topics mentioned. Although, the article does not have a main article, from my perspective.
  • There are a we details that weren’t mentioned in the lead and i think that is just a sequencing issue. Some facts that were in the lead were mostly incorporated like a random fact that suited the general topic of the article.
  • The lead is indeed detailed though, not too much. The problem that the details poses is the lack of elaboration later in the article but again i think it has to do with the layout/sequencing of the paragraphs.

Lead evaluation[edit]

Content[edit]

Guiding questions
  • The content is relevant.
  • As far as i can understand the information is up-to-date.
  • There is just a lack of details to topics in the article.
  • The article is all about a few minority groups that are historically underrepresented and ignored. The person of focus is a gay, black poor teacher and artist.

Content evaluation[edit]

Tone and Balance[edit]

Guiding questions
  • The article is relatively neutral.
  • There is just a few facts that seem they were taken from gossip blogs only because there is a tone that barely cares for the personal rights of the individual being spoken of. For example some comments on his personal life are exclaimed without any other extensions, similar to how a “tell all” would
  • The article is titled Alvin Ailey although much of the information is about his choreography career and his school specifically. There is an absence of information about his personal life, trial and tribulations and so on.
  • The article has very little bias and maintains a formal tone.

Tone and balance evaluation[edit]

Sources and References[edit]

Guiding questions
  • Each paragraph has an adequate amount of resources to support and claims made about the topic.
  • Are the sources thorough - somewhat. Some of the sources only cover a few details but some are very thorough.
  • There are many sources from 2017 or earlier although many from as late as 1989. I think this is okay because a lot of the information is missing in the first place and i think that is due to the dilution of information on events pertaining to black queer people as society ages.
  • The sources do not have a wide range of origins which makes me think the tone of the information gathered will naturally have a certain tone no matter what the wiki researchers intend.
  • Check a few links. Do they work? Yes the links work.

Sources and references evaluation[edit]

Organization[edit]

Guiding questions
  • The article is just organized in a odd manner but perhaps there is a reason for that.
  • i could not find any grammar or spelling issues.
  • Is the article well-organized - i.e. broken down into sections that reflect the major points of the topic? I would disagree that the article is organized well the topics personal life and background information is only mentioned at the end.

Organization evaluation[edit]

Images and Media[edit]

Guiding questions
  • Does the article include images? Yes, it could include more but the pictures that are there enhance the article.
  • Are images well-captioned? Satisfactorily captioned.
  • Do all images adhere to Wikipedia's copyright regulations? Yes
  • Are the images laid out in a visually appealing way? Yes

Images and media evaluation[edit]

Checking the talk page[edit]

Guiding questions
  • What kinds of conversations, if any, are going on behind the scenes about how to represent this topic? Edits that the article need to focus on and resources to follow. Also things about what is relevant to include.
  • The article is rated-C with connection to several wikiProjects (5, with various importance levels)
  • This topic has never been discussed in class

Talk page evaluation[edit]

Overall impressions[edit]

Guiding questions
  • There are a number of people working on this which insinuates cooperation collaboration and so on and that is positive for many obvious reasons on a project like this.
  • Other than adding more information that will surely improve people’s understanding the article needs a whole new renovation. The structure is odd and the layout seems rushed. Which i am very sure it is not due to the amount of people working on it. Therefore i think an overall review of the article and fresh set of eyes and information will best improve the page
  • The article in indeed underdeveloped.
