From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Conspiracy theories about the Climatic Research Unit (CRU) at the University of East Anglia (UEA), commonly referred to as "Climategate", are a subset of global warming conspiracy theory, which refers to claims that the evidence behind climate change is incorrect, and that its data and theories were invented for financial or ideological reasons.

Contrary to these conspiracy theories, the scientific opinion on climate change, represented by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, maintains that observational data provides "new and stronger evidence that most of the warming observed over the last 50 years is attributable to human activities."

Proponents of climategate conspiracy theories tend to be linked to the politics of libertarian conservatism in the public sector and the climate change denial movement fostered by the private sector.

Description

[edit]

Climategate conspiracy theory generally falls into two camps, with primary conspiracies posited by global warming conspiracy theory proponents who are critics of the CRU. These detractors promote a conspiracy theory whereby climate scientists manipulate and suppress climate science data to support their view that the Earth is warming.

On the other hand, supporters of the CRU claim that the detractors are conspiring to reject the evidence for climate change and damage the reputation of scientists involved in climate research.[1]
