Article Evaluation - American Civics Test

[edit]

I read an article regarding the Civics Test administered during the naturalization process and these are the key takeaways:

- There are only 9 cited references

- While everything in the article is relevant, the points in the article as a whole could be a good intro to the subject

- History behind the test (i.e Why is the test administered?)

- How has the test been weaponized to target underrepresented and poorer non-speaking immigrants?

Possible Articles to Work On

[edit]

Notes/Comments:

- Article seems to be lacking in cited references

- Can elaborate more on the 65/20 Consideration and other special considerations prior to taking the test

- History behind the test (i.e Why is the test administered?)

- How has the test been weaponized to target underrepresented and poorer non-speaking immigrants?

- What were the reasons for implementing the civics test as a graduation requirement?

Notes/Comments:

- Good amount of sources

- Does not explain/cover the dynamic between his office and the 2020 election

- Does cover his work on voting rights

- When covering his personal, I think it should be more than just three sentences.

- His personal life could come before going over his political career

Notes/Comments:

- Only three cited sources

- The sources seem to be coming from the same organization, which is from the school

- As an alumnus from that high school, there are a lot of significant traditions and events that has shaped the school's legacy

- The school's Division I football record is worth mentioning

Notes/Comments:

- The article as a whole seems a little bland

- External links seem to only lead to ONE source

- The annual Merrie Monarch Festival is worth mentioning

- Land disputes with Native Hawaiian homelands should be mentioned

Notes/Comments:

- There's definitely a lot of cited resources

- An editor mentioned in the talk section that Manifest Destiny should be mentioned, which I agree since it significantly influenced US policy and imperial ideas.

- A lot of disputes on how to precisely word/fit Manifest Destiny into the article

- Possibly add a section about US tradtions/customs?

Final Topic - American Civics Test

[edit]

Comments/Possible Edits:

I think there needs to be more background and history about the American civics test. Adding accounts from immigrants and disparities that test takers have experienced would add more depth and significance to the article. The term America Civics Test could also apply to its broader application in education.

Response to Peer Reviews

[edit]

The majority of the feedback I've gotten has been solely technical. It's interesting to me that some of the reviewers don't fully grasp the topic of the American Civics Test. One reviewer suggested that I use the 2020 version of the USCIS test because it is "current," but this ignores the fact that the 2020 version has since been scrapped and replaced with the 2008 version. Nonetheless, I will make additional edits to the more technical aspects of writing the article. I will also include more information in each of the subheadings to make the reading flow much smoother for the readers. Essentially, I'm looking into exploring the American Civics Test in a more broader topic than just squarely related to immigration.
