Jerome “Jerry” Wallace is an American ballet dancer, painter, Batik artist, dramatic performer and director who has lived most of his life on the island of Kauaï, Hawaii. He was noted as America’s foremost aesthetic and technical innovator in the ancient art of batik. He is widely known for reviving Batik art in the western world after learning the craft in his travels in Indonesia.

Early life[edit]

A native of Portsmouth, Ohio, Jerome is the son of Alexander Klotsche Wallace and Fairybelle Lorella Mayo Wallace. His mother was a professional ballet dancer with the Fokine Ballet Company, traveling in Europe and the USA. His father was a house painter and “Sunday” painter throughout his life.

Career Beginnings[edit]

Formal Education[edit]

Wallace began his formal education at Carnegie-Mellon University and Texas Christian University (1949-1952) where he studied painting and drama. Later in life he completed a B.F.A. in Theatre and Drama (1991) and a M.F.A. (Magna Cum Laude) in Theatre and Drama (1994) at the University of Hawaii at Manoa.

Beginnings in Dance[edit]

Wallace began his artistic career in dance, following the footsteps of his mother who was an international ballet dancer. He ventured to New York City where he performed in various dance and chorus roles in Broadway musicals. After his years in New York, Wallace transitioned to Hollywood where he earned his living in ballet and musical comedy and in modeling. His dancing career came to an end after a broken foot on a sound stage at Paramount Studios. It was while he was convalescing in Europe that he became interested in the potential of ethnic crafts, particularly the spinning and looming of textiles.

Artistic Laborers in California[edit]

He returned to California and

Studying Natural Dyes & Textiles[edit]

Jerome spent several months on the island of Bali, Indonesia exploring the indigenous techniques of batik which have remained unchanged for 800 years.

Batik Man of Kauai[edit]

In 1962, Jerome settled permanently in Kauai where he quickly became known as the “Batik Man of Kauai.” Fusing the experience of art with his own life experience, Wallace uncovered and devised new ways of creating batiks that he terms “peinture-batiks.”
