Presently he is working as Professor & Head, Department of Biochemistry, King George's Medical University, Lucknow [4].

Prof. Mahdi has more than three decades of research and teaching experience with 380 research publications (having over 16000 citations), including 34 book chapters. He has written eight books and has been Editor/Member Editorial Board of International and National Journals and reviewer of many national and international journals of repute [5]. He has guided twenty two PhD, four M.Phil. and over two hundred MD/MS/DM/MCh/MDS/MSc students and has supervised over fifty research projects from DST, DBT, CSIR, UGC, ICMR, UPCST, including the prestigious DST – FIST (Government of India) and The World Academy of Science project (Trieste, Italy) [6] . Prof. Mahdi has made pioneering contributions in the area of natural products, metal toxicity and Free Radical Biology. His seminal work on protection from free radical mediated cellular injury by herbals in diabetic rats is well recognized.

His in-depth studies related to perturbation of antioxidant levels consequent to oxidative stress in seminal plasma of infertile men showed remarkable amelioration by some herbal preparations. His studies demonstrated significant improvement in sperm count and motility following inhibition of lipid peroxidation in seminal plasma by Mucuna pruriens in male sterility. The studies further showed that treatment with M. pruriens and Withania sominifera significantly ameliorated psychological stress, regulated steroidogenesis and improved semen quality in infertile men.

Also, his extensive studies on possible association of aluminium with Alzheimer’s disease have demonstrated that Al may be linked with neuro-lipofuscinogenesis, mitochondrial and endoplasmic reticulum stress and these changes may be responsible for the development of age related disorders, such as Alzheimer’s disease.

Prof. Mahdi has organized over a dozen national and international conferences and delivered innumerable public lectures in different parts of the country to create awareness about the adverse effects of lead poisoning. Currently he is working in the area of lead and fluoride toxicity.

Prof. Mahdi was President – of Association of Clinical Biochemists – India in 2018 and has earlier been President of Indian Society for Lead Awareness & Research (InSLAR) [7] and President, Indian Academy of Biomedical Sciences (IABS) as also Vice - President of Society of Free Radical Research (SFRR), India. He has successfully organized the 44th Annual Conference of Association of Clinical Biochemists of India as Organizing Secretary.

Many Foreign Students have also worked under his guidance. Recently, The World Academy of Sciences (TWAS), Trieste, Italy, awarded Fellowship for Research and Advanced Training to Dr. Ezejiofor N. Anthonet, Ph.D., Department of Experimental Pharmacology & Toxicology, Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences, University of Port Harcourt, Nigeria, to work with him.
