FIRE STATIONS

The North Middleton Township Fire Company now runs out of two (2) different stations. Station #1 is located at 310 North Middleton Road and Station #2 is located at 2061 Spring Road.

Station #1

The original fire station was build in 1960 at 310 North Middleton Road. The land for the station was purchased from Cloyd Snyder. It consisted of a single bay garage and an office. In 1962 an addition was added onto the original building adding a 2 bay garage. The old engine bay was made into a dayroom for the members. Starting in 1978 and finally opened in 1981 was the 2nd addition to the fire station. This addition added our current kitchen and banquet hall and a third bay to the garage.

Station #2

The original Station #2 was located on Fern Avenue and was built in 1975 and placed into service in 1976. The land where the fire station was located was donated to the Fire Company by John Barrick Sr and the lumber to build the fire station was donated by Roy Shughart.

In 1999/2000, a new Station #2 was built and placed into service at it's current location of 2061 Spring Road.

APPARATUS

Here is a history of all the apparatus that has been used by the company.

The first piece that was purchased by the North Middleton Township Fire Company was a 1951 Ford engine. It was purchased from the West End Fire Company in Shippensburg. It was purchased in September of 1961. It was run for several years until it was involved in an accident in the mid 60's.

At that time, it was replaced by a 1948 American LeFrance engine that was purchased from a Hyattsville Maryland fire company. This engine was run until sometime in 1972.

A 1957 Ford tanker was purchased sometime in the mid 60's. It was an old Citgo gas truck and was converted into a tanker truck for the Fire Company. It held 1500 gallons of water. This tanker was in service until sometime in 1988. When the American LeFrance it went out of service in 1972, the Fire Company only had this tanker to run.

In 1983 a R-Model Mack was purchased new and placed into service as a second tanker. At that time, it was listed as Tanker 139 and the 1957 Ford tanker was listed as Tanker 239. The 1983 Mack is still in service today as Tanker 39

In 1975 and 1976, North Middleton Township purchased two (2) engines for the Fire Company. In 1975, they purchased a 1975 MB-model Mack. It originally ran as Engine 39. In 1976, they purchased a 1976 R-model Mack. This became Engine 139 and the 1975 Mack became Engine 239. The 1975 Mack ran until 1990 when it was replaced and the 1976 Mack was run until 1995 when it was replaced.

In 1975, the Fire Company leased a 1968 Jeep from the Pennsylvania Department of Forestry for $1.00. The 1968 jeep was made into a brush truck and is still in service today. It runs out of Station #1.

In 1985, the Fire Company purchased a 1974 Mack Baker 75' Aerialscope ladder truck. This ladder truck was purchased from New York City. The truck was placed into service on election day in November of 1986.

In 1990, the Township replaced Engine 239 with a 1990 Mack engine with a Ranger body. This engine is still in service and runs out of Station #2.

In 1995, the Township replaced Engine 139 with a 1995 E-One engine. This engine is still in service and runs out of Station #1.

In January 2005, the Fire Company purchased a 2005 Chevy Tahoe and a 2005 Chevy 2500 pickup. The Chevy Tahoe was placed into service in February of 2005 as a Chiefs Vehicle and the Chevy 2500 was placed into service in February of 2005 as a Utility truck.

In September of 2005, the Fire Company purchased a 2005 E-One Bronto Skylift 100' ladder truck. This ladder truck replaced the 1974 Mack Baker Aerialscope. This ladder truck was placed into service in November of 2005 and runs out of Station #2.

LOCAL FIRE DEPARTMENT RECEIVES $39,900 THROUGH FY 2006 ASSISTANCE TO FIREFIGHTERS GRANT AWARD FROM U.S. DEPARTMENT OF HOMELAND SECURITY

On October 2nd, 2006 , the U.S. Department of Homeland Security awarded a $39,900 Assistance to Firefighters Grant (AFG) program award to the North Middleton Township Fire Company. This grant will allow the North Middleton Township Fire Company to purchase a complete set of turnout gear for all of their active members. This turnout gear consists of: bunker pants, coat, helmet, gloves, boots, nomex hood and a flashlight. A complete set of gear costs approximately $2,100 and we will be purchasing 20 sets of turnout gear.

Nationally, the AFG awards, which will be distributed in phases, will ultimately provide approximately $485 million to roughly 4500 fire-related organizations.
Through the AFG program, the department awards grants to firefighters, emergency response personnel and first responders throughout the country to enhance response capabilities and to more effectively protect the health and safety of the public, with respect to fire and other hazards. The grants provide resources for local fire departments and emergency medical services programs to purchase or receive training, conduct first responder health and safety programs, and buy equipment and response vehicles.
“The Assistance to Firefighters Grants program has been instrumental in building capacity and has provided needed resources for our nation’s firefighters,” said Under Secretary for Preparedness George Foresman. “From the purchase of equipment to first responder training, the AFG program has had an immensely positive impact on fire related initiatives which has directly resulted in saving lives and property in communities throughout the United States .”
Due to the highly competitive nature of the AFG, more than 18,000 applications, totaling close to $2.5 billion in grant requests, were received for FY2006. Since 2001, the AFG has provided over $2.4 billion in grants to fire departments and first responder organizations to purchase response equipment, personal protective equipment, vehicles and fire prevention activities.
The Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program is administered by the department’s Directorate for Preparedness through its Office of Grants and Training (G&T) in cooperation with the United States Fire Administration, also a division of the Preparedness Directorate.
The Directorate for Preparedness bolsters the nation’s security through a multilayered system of preparedness measures based on risk assessment and management. Working with federal, state, local and private sector partners, the Directorate for Preparedness identifies threats, determines vulnerabilities and targets resources where risk is greatest. Through grants, training and exercises, fire service, public health and citizen preparedness initiatives, the Directorate fosters a layered system of protective measures to safeguard our borders, critical infrastructure and cyber security and telecommunications systems.
The Office of Grants and Training, the federal government’s lead agency responsible for preparing the nation against terrorism and other catastrophic events, provides a wide array of support to the emergency preparedness and response community. The U.S. Fire Administration (USFA) works to reduce life and economic losses due to fire and related emergencies through leadership, advocacy, coordination and support.

Knox Box Rapid Entry Security System

North Middleton Fire Company is introducing Knox Boxes to our Township. Knox Boxes are secure key vaults that holds a key to your home or business. In the event of a fire or medical emergency, it allows emergency personnel to quickly gain entry into your home or business without damaging doors and/or windows. Only emergency personnel have a key to access the Knox Box, which can only be activated by using the 911 Communication Center; therefore, there is no threat of a security issue. Having a Knox Box installed can save valuable seconds in putting a fire out.

If you would like more information regarding Knox Boxes or, if you would like to purchase a Knox Box, please stop by the Township Office at 2051 Spring Road. Additional information can be obtained at their website at www.knoxbox.com.
