Mercedes Siles Molina (Jaén, 1966) is a Spanish mathematician, Professor of Algebra at the University of Málaga, specialising in non-commutative algebra; in particular, in non-associative algebras and ring theory. She has been President of the Spanish Mathematics Committee and Vice-President of the Spanish Royal Mathematical Society. She is currently the Director General of the National Agency for Quality Assessment and Accreditation (ANECA)., .
Biography
[edit]Mercedes Siles was born in Jaén; she lived in Alcaudete until she was two years old and moved with her family to Madrid, where she lived until she was thirteen. At that age they moved to Malaga, where she continued her studies at a public high school and then at the University of Malaga, where she studied Mathematics. In 2020, after taking up her post as director of the National Agency for Quality Assessment and Accreditation (ANECA), she moved back to Madrid.
Professional career
[edit]In 1989 he obtained a degree in Mathematical Sciences from the University of Malaga (UMA), graduating with honours. In 1992 he obtained his doctorate at the UMA cum laude with the thesis Strong regularity and generalised inverses in Jordan systems. She began teaching in the 1989-90 academic year. In 1994 she became an associate professor and a year later a full professor. In November 1996 she became a Full Professor of University, which she held until December 2009, when she won the competition for a professorship in the area of algebra, after being accredited by ANECA; since then she has been a professor in the Department of Algebra, Geometry and Topology at the UMA. Since 19 February 2020 she has been Director General of the National Agency for Quality Assessment and Accreditation (ANECA).
She has made singular contributions in a wide range of fields. In mathematics, her most cited work is a book published by Springer (Leavitt path algebras), unique in its field. In the cultural field, she has created the exhibitions The Taste of Mathematics and Parallel Universes in Dialogue, for which she was invited to MoMath (New York). She set up Pi Day in Spain. She created the steMatEsElla programme, sponsored by Accenture, to promote the talent of young women in STEM disciplines. She collaborated in setting up the Andalusian node of AMIT, which was awarded the 2012 Meridiana prize. She has received several recognitions and awards.
