DJ Mekalek is a hip-hop DJ and producer based in Los Angeles, CA. Along with Stoerok, he is one of two DJs/producers for the hip-hop group Time Machine. Among other artists, DJ Mekalek has performed alongside The Beatnuts, Common, J-Live and People Under The Stairs.[2] In 2008, DJ Mekalek was profiled as part of MTV U's 'Freshman 5' segment covering up and coming musical artists.[3]
Background
[edit]DJ Mekalek began his musical career as a DJ for 90.3 WRIU, the radio station for The University of Rhode Island. He followed a long line of talented MCs and DJs to pass through WRIU, including Masta Ace and Sage Francis.[4]
Musical Influences
[edit]DJ Mekalek credits DJ Premier as his primary musical influence, as has been described by FreshOutMedia as a "kind of futuristic DJ Premier love child"[5]
Production Style
[edit]CokeMachineGlow described DJ Mekalek as being "good at what he does: his immaculately blended sample tapestries are warm and dense, crate-digger symphonies, and his drums snap, crackle, and pop as pleasingly as a bowl of Rice Krispies while staying locked in to a steady fever."[6]
Other Projects
[edit]Street Dreams
[edit]Thes One of People Under The Stairs enlisted DJ Mekalek to perform scratches for the score of the movie "Street Dreams", a dramatic feature film starring Rob Dyrdek and Paul Rodriguez Jr. slated for release in 2009.[7]
