Ormolycka is a New York, NY-based independent record label specializing in releasing a "WTF" breadcrumb trail of eclectic music best nestled into the uncategorizable genre. The label is owned by Jason Adam Baker , who founded Ormolycka in 2005 while living in Paris, France. The original mission of the project was to release 10 individual single sided LP records with a selection of 10 visual artists chosen by the musician on each record to create original artwork for the covers. Short run vinyl art projects to be used as a sort of traveling art show for each individual artist on the "label". Shortly after this initial concept proved painstakingly seemingly impossible to execute the label opened up a storefront art gallery and shop in Malmö, Sweden in 2006. In 2008, Baker moved back to NYC and modeled a physical record label after other independent American labels such as Dischord Records, tUMULt, and SST Records. Borrowing the ethos of Discord's affordable model of keeping a low price for each release, and using the money earned from the sales to produce more as the demand decreed. Each individual release has a distinctly uniform design keeping a consistent aesthetic pattern for each of the labels releases. Thus maintaining a thread between the individual releases even when the music contained within is very different.
The label is most notable for being the first label to physically release Death Grips, creating their first cassette release of Exmilitary made available at their initial NYC shows in the summer of 2011. Also of note, as divulged in a radio interview given on Radio Centraal in 2008 by Ormolycka creator, Jason Baker was his former career as an actor on various South Korean children's television programs.
Ormolycka began it's physical output of mainly cassette tapes in 2007. Today the label creates releases in the form of engraved machete's to commemorate the 45th President of the United States' inauguration, etched with the phrase "EYE SEE U" and the label's logo. As well as concealed knives that look like combs with the label's name engraved into the handle.
