Norman Harold Moss[edit]

Norman Harold Moss was mayor of Stratford from 1947-1957.

He was born in Dunedin and educated in Wellington. He was first employed in the Commercial bank before serving overseas in World War 1. He qualified in law in 1923, practising in Hawera and Eltham before moving to Stratford.

During his time as mayor he was heavily involved in planning for the the overdue upgrade of the town's facilities and infrastructure. N H Moss was a member of the first National Roads Board and took a prominent role in the merger of the Whangamomona County Council and Stratford County Council in 1955. He was chairman of the Taranaki Electric Power Board, President of the Stratford Racing Club and was appointed to the local Government Commission when he reigned as mayor. He was president of the Municipal Association of New Zealand from 1951-1957.

N H Moss accompanied Queen Elizabeth 2 along her walkabout in Stratford during the Royal Visit 1954. He was awarded an OBE for his services in 1954 and died in Oakura in 1974.
