Silvester aka Silva was born to Wayiti Lucas Shimushi and Kupembona Annastasia at Nyangana state hospital on the 26th of October 1986 as their first blessing from the almighty God. Nyangana is in the Ndiyona constituency and this is where Lucas' mother lineage lived.
Wayiti Lucas was working at the regional office in the Rundu district under the Ministry of Education's language department at that time. In the same year though, he was then transferred to work as a teacher at the Linus Shashipapo Secondary School situated about a 100 km east of Rundu. This would later be Silva's new home for a few years to come. Kupembona Annastasia was still in high school by then and later began work as a literacy promoter.
Silva's early childhood was spent at Linus Shashipapo. The school compounds with its green orchards became his play grounds. He could however not grow to experience much of this place as his father, was again moved to a new school in 1990.
Shitemo Primary school was were his father continued his work as a dedicated mathematics teacher. His mother however only resumed work 2 years after their arrival at Shitemo. In the same year, 1992, she gave birth to what would be Silva's brother and named him after his father's grandfather, Ntjinano. Silva was growing by the day and started going to school with his father even though he was still under age. Silva only started formal education in 1993. Things were going well but they could not stay long. Five yeas after, his father was transferred to another school and promoted as principal. This meant another change of houses. Shitemo happened to be where Anna's lineage lived.
They then moved to Rundu and firstly resided in Safari but later moved to Kehemu east. Silvester was already in grade 5 in 1997. Rundu was exciting for Silvester, as he had a bicycle and would always go cycling with his buddies. Making friends was not easy though. Silva always loved his bike. He was also doing well in his school matters and as result in 1999, he graduated from Kehemu Primary School. Deciding where to go for his Secondary School was often a topic of debate between his dad and mom but finally settled it and sent him to St Boniface College the following year.
St Boniface College is a Private Catholic School situated about 30Km east of Rundu. It was started by Brother Piet and Sebastian and others. It was a good moment and Silva enjoyed every stay. The pupils were friendly. Everyone was approachable and caring. The teachers were so hardworking and very supportive. In 2002, Silva was in grade 10 already and at the end of that year, his hard work paid off and got awards for best student in Accounting, Life Science and Physical Science in the region.
In 2003, Silva was in the 11th grade and this was a good and bad year or even probably the worst for that matter. Because of his outstanding performance in grade 10 the previous year, he was one of the 4 pupils chosen countrywide to represent schools in Southern Africa at the aRSI research programme. This was held at the University of Botswana for two weeks starting the 25th of June 2003. He also met Monika who is part and parcel of his life now and forever. With her, he has nothing more to ask for, as she completes his life. This highlighted the year.
If he had only known however, I bet you, he would have rather spent those two weeks with his dad because when he got back from Botswana, his father was in ill health. Silva could not believe it because when he left, his father was fine. It was even his father that took him to Grootfontein when he went for this research programme. His dad passed away two weeks after his arrival in Namibia, a shocking news it was to him. Silva had two more siblings namely Sanny and his little angel Mercy before Wayiti Snr. passed away on the 16th of July 2003. He could not come to terms with his dad's departure and even now he still questions why...? Now a lot of things changed after his dad passed away. Issues like changing houses, a break in links between families and so on. It meant challenge.
His mother(business woman) is a strong and disciplined lady. She was and is always there for her kids. She works hard to bring food on the table just like Silva's dad did. She is and will be the best thing that happened to Silva.
Being the first born, this meant that Silva has to be strong rather than sit back and mourn about the incident. He continued to excel in his studies. He continued to carry the same discipline that his father and mother have put into him. He wanted to do his mother proud. Monika was always there to support unconditionally.
In 2004, he was elected as head prefect of his high school and things seemed to have stabilized. Silva matriculated with flying colours scoring an asterisk in History, four first grades and a second grade in English. This is enough prove that his dad's departure never let him down but rather made him strong, though he still mourns about it.
Silva didn't stop there and in 2005 he enrolled at Africa's number one university, namely, the [University of Cape Town] (UCT). This was one of his best moments in life. He enrolled for a four year Bachelor of Science degree in electrical engineering and he is in his fourth and final year{2008}. He is sponsored by Nampower now. At UCT, he continued to work to his best. He got appointed as a residence tutor for maths (his favorite course) in 2006 (tutoring first year students) and 2007 (tutoring second year students). He also serves as the Treasurer for the Namibian Student Society at UCT for academic year 2007 and 2008.
Silva now lives with his mother and 3 siblings in Rundu's suburban of Safari. They are however contemplating about leaving for another place in town in the near future. In 2008, Silva continues to be there for his mother, friends, relatives and strives forward with the help of the almighty God, and peeps. His mother plays an important role and still advices Silva on how to behave, how to live with people. She emphasizes discipline and the respect for people. She also tells Silva to learn to share and support those in need.
Silva is a very humble, down to earth kind of person. He respects everybody and believes that a person is NOTHING without other people. People need one another. He welcomes advice from young or old...
Where Silva is going to be in the next 2 years, only God can tell. But given the past, it looks like he is set to make a name for himself, for Namibia and even Africa at large!!!!!
