Palmerin of England (Por. Palmeirim de Inglaterra) is a chivalric romance written by Francisco de Moraes.

Publication history[edit]

The earliest known edition of Palmerin of England was first published—as Palmeirim de Inglaterra—in 1544 in Portugal, and was followed by editions in 1567, 1592, 1786, and 1852. No copy of the 1544 edition is known, and proof of its existence comes only from a reference to it by the editor of the 1786 edition. In that edition the editor evidently had access to a copy of the 1544 edition that he "made use of".[1] In it he also describes a dedication in the 1544 edition to Dona Maria, a Infanta of Portugal and sister to the king, Dom João III.[1]

The only known translation into Spanish was published, in two volumes, in 1547 and 1548.[1]

Based on the Spanish edition, Jacques Vincent published a French translation, in two volumes, in 1552 and 1553. This edition bears a dedication to Diane de Poitiers, noble and courtier in the court of Henri II; and it explicitly indicates it was "translated from Spanish" (French: traduit du Castillan).[1] A revised edition was published in 1574, and in 1829 a new, abridged, translation from the Portugese edition was published by Eugène Garay de Monglave.[2]

The first Italian edition was translated by Mambrino Roseo da Fabriano and published in Venice in 1553 (Vol. I) and 1554 (Vol. II) by Francesco Portinaris. The source appears to be the Spanish edition based on its title page statement: "Translated from Spanish to the Tuscan language" (Italian: Tradotto di Spagnolo in lingua Toscana).[3]
