Blue[edit]

Jessica Helfand, a well-known designer, chatted about her new class "Blue" with The Yale Herald. She got the idea after the Assistant Dean suggested teaching a course about something that means a lot of different things to people. "I immediately thought of blue," she said. The class looks at where the word "blue" comes from and how it's used in different ways, like "blue blood" or "blue collar." Helfand talks about how blue shows up a lot in stories and culture, like in perfumes or literature. She wants to explore why everyone likes blue but feels different about it, depending on where they're from. She's curious about blue things too, from pictures to teapots, and how they surprise her. Exploring blue seems like a way to learn about all the different stories and meanings connected to this one color. Her important quote was, "I immediately thought of blue." (samira)
