Doctrine of the affections

I chose to evaluate this article because I am a music major who has passion for Baroque music and the Doctrine of Affections is an essential characteristic that made music the way it was back then and today.

Lead

The Lead of this article included an introductory sentence that concisely and clearly describes the article's topic through the definition of what Doctrine of the Affections meant. The Lead does include a brief description of the article's major sections in order by first defining it, a brief explanation of its history, and ended the lead with examples. The Lead does include information that is not present in this article such as how Johann Sebastian Bach used Doctrine of the Affections within his work. Overall, this Lead is concise which gives readers an introduction to the main ideas which will be later expanded throughout the article.

Content

Throughout the article the content stayed relevant to the topic even though there were lots of examples. The content was very general, I feel like the writer could have gone more into depth with its history especially how different art form such as paintings, music, and theatre used Doctrine of the Affections. There was no content about how Doctrine of the Affections influenced future arts, this was a missed opportunity on expanding the article. I find that the article was very limited in information and missed important examples such as Johann Sebastian Bach.

Tone and Balance

The tone of this article was neutral with no heavy biased toward a particular position. There is no overrepresentation or underrepresentation. There is also no favour of one position or another.

Sources and References

The article is reliable with the fact that there are reliable secondary sources, although there were not enough sources used as examples to elaborate. It does not reflect the available literature on the topic. Some of the sources are current there should have been more sources that are current. There were also not enough diverse spectrum of authors. The links that were provided do work.

Organization

Since this was a short article it was organized in a way that was clear and easy to read with no grammar or spelling errors. I do still feel as though this article did not elaborate enough therefore the author could have broken up the history into three parts one being art, one being music, and one being theatre with examples in each.

Images and Media

Unfortunately there were no images that were used at all. There are a lot of musical scores that could have been used with a description of how Doctrine of the affections was incorporated into the piece or even paintings.

Checking the talk page

The conversations that are happening behind the scenes talk about how there is not enough information on the topic and that the overall article is too general. They also suggest that there should be more examples with explanations. This is part of a WikiProject under the Baroque category.

Overall impressions

The overall status of this article is poor. The strength of this article is that it does not stray away from the main topic and is relevant throughout. This article can be improved by elaborating more through different examples from different art forms with explanations.
