Joan Rankin (24 June 1940 -), née Trehair, is a South African Children’s Writer and Illustrator.

Joan Rankin was born on 24 June. She grew up in Johannesburg and attended Roedean School. She studied graphic art at the Michaelis Art School Cape Town (1957-1958) under Katrina Harris and studied Fine Art under Sidney Goldblatt for several years. She was influenced by the work of Ronald Searle of Punch magazine .

Her books have been published in Europe, UK, USA, South America and Korea and have been translated into numerous languages.

A Frog in A Bog by Karma Wilson, has been very popular and has also been published in Korea. Publishers’ Weekly describes Rankin's illustrations in this story as “sassy, intricately composed watercolors” which “feature variegated, saturated backgrounds that often look appropriately bog-spattered and sun-dried (even, sometimes, tie-dyed).” Another favourite is Mrs McTats and her houseful of cats by Alyssa Satin Capucilli. Wow! It’s Great being a Duck was co-published in South America and Korea. Publishers’ Weekly refers to Rankin’s illustrations in Your somebody Special, Walliwigs as “delicious comic confections.”
